Michael Rutledge Obituary
SAN JUAN - Michael Melvin Rutledge, 15, died Sunday, March 25, 2007, at McAllen Medical Center.
Born in McAllen, Michael was formerly of Pharr and had lived in San Juan for five years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan and was a student at P.S.J.A. North. Michael was a member of the P.S.J. A. North Raider Band, participated in drama and the Dual Language Program and was former mascot for the San Juan Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, barbecuing and spending time with his family and friends. Michael was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone.
Michael is survived by his parents, Melvin and Nelda Rutledge of San Juan; a sister, Jennifer Rutledge of San Juan; paternal grandparents, Melvin and Leonor Rutledge of Pharr; maternal grandparents, Jesus and Consuelo Garza of Mission; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary today, March 27, 2007, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.

My daughter attends PSJA North (Raiderettes)and although she did'nt know Michael personally they had mutual friends and we attended his funeral because we were really touched by the outpouring of friendship and love amongst his friends/family. The days following his passing my daughter and I were listening to christian radio and we heard a song. We looked at each other and thought, this is Micahel's message to all of us and we wanted to share this with you. The song by Mark Harris, "Whish You Were Here" the following are the lyrics:

Mom, know that Michael is in Heaven running the streets of gold. Playing his sax and worshiping his Creator along with all the angels. His message: reach out for Jesus, seek Him, In Him you will find peace and one day He'll welcome you home, just like Michael. Michael is finally free, and that is his message. even though i might not have known your son in person, i still feel your pain and im greatly sorry for this great loss, but please dont you cry, remember... everything happens for a reason. if god chose to take your son with him, it was only because he needed michael with him. god never gives you more pain than you can handle, so please stop your cries, and be happy that atlast your son is up in heaven with his creator.

My family & I would like to express our deepest condolences to you all during this time. I found out about Micheal on Easter Sunday when I read the obits in the Monitor. After making some calls, I found out it was your son. I last saw you all at my moms rosary and funeral in December (Tia Grace Garza). All I know is God is in control.

Michael...we are all going to miss you very much. I remember you running around your cousin Brittney's house when you were little and how you would try to fit in with us and hang. My deepest condolences to you Melivin, Nelda, and the whole Rutledge Family. Being a volunteer parent for the Raider Band and having Michael over at my house, I had the pleasure of meeting him. He was very respectful and shy. It was an even bigger thrill when I realized it was your son, Melvin, becuase of how we practically grew up together and I was so happy that our children became friends. The news of his passing hit my son pretty hard as I can imagine it has hit the entire Raider Band. There is nothing I can say that will make it any better just that I have you in my prayers and I know that the Love of your Family, Friends and the Lord will get you through this.

My deepest condolences go out to the Rutledge family. Although I missed my opportunity to get to know Michael, I didn't have to know him to feel the sorrow of his passing. He had many friends at PSJA North, especially in the Raider Band and you should know that he will be greatly missed by so many that he touched within the time he lived on this earth.
