Rusty Vernon Dargel Jr.

Weslaco - Russel Vernon Dargel Jr., affectionately known as "Rusty," passed away peacefully at his home in Weslaco, TX, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Rusty was born in Mercedes, TX, on January 19, 1945, to proud parents Russell Sr. and Nelle Dargel.

Rusty Jr. attended Donna High School and graduated in 1963. He continued his education at Baylor University, earning a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Psychology.

In 1933, a man named Mr. Russell Dargel, Sr. built his first wooden boat. Initially, he built the boat to use while fishing in the Lower Laguna Madre. However, when his neighbor saw the boat, he was immensely impressed and purchased it. This led Mr. Dargel to build another ship, and as the trend continued, he soon realized there was enough demand for quality-built fishing boats. At this point, he and his father phased out of farming. Four years later, in 1937, Russell Dargel, Sr. founded Dargel Boats on the same land his family had farmed for years in Donna, Texas.

As time passed, in the late 1970s, Russell's son, Rusty Jr., joined the business and, with his hard work and perseverance, expanded the company's reach and established a dealer network along the entire Texas Coast. The company continued to prosper, and in December of 2006, Rusty retired.

Not only was he a successful professional, but he also had a passion for hitting the greens that was second to none. He accomplished the incredible feat of making three holes in one, leaving everyone in awe of his skills. His love for the sport brought so much joy to those around him, creating unforgettable memories that will be forever treasured.

Russel Vernon Dargel Jr. is preceded in death by his parents, Russell Vernon Dargel Sr. and Nelle Dargel, and his wife, Connie.

He leaves behind his wife, Jo Katherine Dargel, his sons Corey Dargel and Aaron Dargel (Lisa), his granddaughter, Lilian Ellis, and his sisters Debra Morton of McKinney, TX, and Mary Jo Pickett of Mesquite, TX.
