SARAH RAMIREZ Obituary

SARAH A. RAMIREZ
Sarah A. Ramirez, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on January 29, 2012 at home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in 1930 in Dean, Louisiana to Effie and Edward Aycock. She attended elementary and high school there, and went on to nursing school in Shreveport, Louisiana. It was there that she met the love of her life, Dr. Mario E. Ramirez, who was a medical resident at the time.
They were married in 1949 in his hometown of Roma, Texas. Together, they established a medical practice and became pillars of the community. They were happily married for 62 years and raised their five children together.
Aside from being a devoted and loving mother, she participated in a true partnership with her husband to bring modern health care to Starr County, including driving him on house calls to remote areas, working as a nurse in their hospital, and giving shots in vaccination clinics. Though she spoke no Spanish when she came to the valley, through perseverance and dedication, she soon became fluent in the language, which endeared her to their patients.
Sarah was a devout Catholic who was very active in her church. She was completely devoted to her family, including her in-laws, Carmen and Efren Ramirez who she was very close to her entire life. She doted on their five children, nursing them through childhood illnesses and driving them to innumerable childhood activities including sports, ballet, and swimming lessons.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Mario E. Ramirez, and their five children, Judge Mario Ramirez (Noelia), Patsy Kittleman (Wes), Dr. Norman Ramirez (Liza), Dr. Jaime Ramirez (Hilary), and Roberto Ramirez (Irene), nineteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by two sisters, Della Meeks and Pauline Kennedy and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Effie and Edward Aycock and her two brothers and sister, Edward Jr., Jim, and Dovie Patrick.
In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to Comfort House, 617 Dallas Ave., McAllen, Tx 78501 or the Hope Family Health Center, 2332 Jordan Rd., McAllen, TX 78503.
A visitation will be held at Kreidler Funeral Home from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 with a Rosary following at Our Lady of Sorrows chapel at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass and service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church at 1:00 PM followed by burial at Roselawn Cemetery. Kreidlerfuneralhome.com

As one of the Ramirez grandchildren--and especially as Sarah's namesake--this loss has been very difficult. But being surrounded by so many people who loved my grandmother, and who keep telling me their wonderful memories of her, has helped. Thanks to everyone for their kind words. We were all lucky to have known Sarah Ramirez.

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the lord.

My prayers and thoughts are with your family.

I was deeply saddened to hear about your family's loss. One of my fondest childhood memories is the awe and excitement of going to the Valley (in 1959!) to see the "Sound of Music" for the first time with Dr. and Mrs. Ramirez and Patsy, an opportunity that I would not have had, otherwise...a tiny example of the kindness and humanity this wonderful woman and her family have bestowed upon our community for so many years. She, and her beautiful family, are in my prayers.
