Alma Mae Root

1925 - 2021

Alma Mae Root, age 95, lifelong resident of Elm Hall, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2021 at Arbor Grove Assisted Living in Alma. She was born August 3, 1925 in Sumner Township the daughter of Glenn and Phyllis (Story) Rockafellow. Alma was a 1943 graduate of Riverdale High School and married Max Eugene Root on July 3, 1947. A blessed union of 72 years, until his passing in the spring of 2020. Alma worked for several years in the offices of Alma Dairy and McDonald Dairy. She retired from Bank of Alma after many years of services as a teller. Alma was a faithful and devoted member of the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and was active with their Women’s Ministries. She was also a member of the Elm Hall Birthday Club and for many years was a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and doing wordsearch puzzles. Her greatest joy was being with her children and grandchildren. Alma is survived by two daughters, Connie (Kip) Walworth of Kentwood, Teresa (Steve) Sanxter of Caledonia; four grandchildren, Carlie (Matt) Cook of Caledonia, Ashley (Keith) Thompson of Middleville, Paul (Katie) Walworth of East Lansing, Meghan Sanxter of Grand Rapids; seven-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Reuel (Lil) Rockafellow of Grand Ledge; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Max; a sister, Ruth Hunt; and a brother, Leonard Rockafellow. Private family services were held at Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Riverdale with interment in Elm Hall Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church or charity of choice. A Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
