Henry Levan Fulton, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, died peacefully Thursday, August 19, 2021, at McLaren Bay Region Hospital in Bay City, surrounded by his family. Henry Fulton was born on April 16, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Henry Roedel Fulton and Harvene Levan Fulton. He married Ann-Adele Lloyd on June 13, 1959; they divorced in 1970. They had two children. He married Nancy Jane Casey on July 13, 1974; they had one child. He earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He was a professor of English at Central Michigan University, specializing in Shakespeare and Scottish literature from 1967 until his retirement in 2000. He also served as director of international programs from 1986 through 1991. He published the modern standard biography of Dr. John Moore, a Scottish author and Enlightenment figure, and numerous scholarly articles. His interests were diverse, ranging from the Detroit Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings, to model trains and airplanes, to gardening, to classical music, and to theater. He loved the films of Akira Kurosawa. He was an active member of the congregation of St. John's Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant, where he sang in the choir and took part in the administration of the church and the diocese. Dr. Fulton is survived by his wife, Nancy and their son Charles and his wife Elizabeth of Easton, Pennsylvania; and by his first wife Ann-Adele and their children Jenny, of Saxtons River, Vermont; and Matthew (Max), of Durham, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Barbara Ann Hinton and Louise Coffin. You may view Henry's obituary online and send a condolence to the family at www.clarkfuneralchapel.com

I still remember the day in September, 1975, when Prof. Fulton strode into the classroom at CMU and said "Good morning, lovers of good literature!" I was a wide-eyed freshman and completely terrified. I took more English literature classes from him over the years, and I am still grateful for his exacting standards of scholarship and his mentorship. He and Nancy were welcoming and supportive of students like me, and made a lasting impact on my life. Nancy, Charlie, Jenny and Max, I'm sorry your loss in his passing.

Nancy and Charlie my deepest sympathy. May Henry Rest In Peace and Rise in glory. I will always hold our friendship close to my heart.
