James McGuirk Obituary

McGuirk, James J. Age 84; of Mt. Pleasant; passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2017 in Rockford, MI. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Thursday, April 13 from 3 to 7 p.m. A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Friday, April 14, at Buck's Run with the family receiving friends from 3 to 4 p.m. A brief ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. with dinner to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider the McGuirk/Ganiard West Side School Scholarship Fund or the McGuirk Family Fund, both funded through the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Jim was born Sept. 21, 1932, in Mt. Pleasant MI, son of the late James and Mamie (Vujtech) McGuirk. A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in 1951, Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1954. In the 1960's he was employed by Dow Chemical in the photography department. He was the owner and operator of United Apartments in Mt. Pleasant, student housing, since 1963. Jim had a passion for boating, water sports, sports cars, and recreational vehicles. He enjoyed and related well to the students who rented from him. He was a very generous man, as well, supporting many good causes in the community. Most notably was a gift to Central Michigan University in honor of the McGuirk Family. As gratitude to Jim, CMU named its arena 'McGuirk Arena'. Jim's generosity wasn't limited to the university. As his family grew up close to, and attended Ganiard Elementary, Jim established the McGuirk/Ganiard Westside School Scholarship benefiting two seniors each year that attended Ganiard while growing up. He was a trailblazer in Mt. Pleasant and many of his real estate dealings will continue to flourish because of his many years of hard work. Jim is survived by two sisters and their husbands, Sonja and Charlie Albaugh of Oil City and JoAnn and Menard Nehrt of Mt. Pleasant; sister-in-law, Jean McGuirk of Mt. Pleasant; nieces and nephews, Sandra and Patrick Dean of Rockford and their children, Nicholas and Virginia 'Ginger'; Leroy 'Chuck' and Jennifer McGuirk of Mt. Greg and I really miss Jim. We shared many a meal at Lester's, The Hole in the Wall, Blondies on the Beach, to name a few. His dry wit and great sense of humor were priceless. He loved teasing me to no end. I really enjoyed working with Jim on his real estate investments for over a decade here in Ft Lauderdale. He taught me alot. It seems like yesterday we were picking him up at the airport and off to Lesters. I can't believe it's been 2 years already. Miss you Jim.

There is an old adage that says, A man is never truly dead and gone as long as there are people left behind who continue to tell his stories and based on that, I would say Jim McGurk is going to be around for a long long time!!

Since we first heard the news of Jim's passing we have all been sharing our stories about Jim. Each of us knew Jim in a different way, and yet all of us recognized that God sent him into our lives as far more than a friend and a customer, Jim was sent as one of our teachers.

Jim McGuirk loved people, especially young people, and after you had been around Jim a few times you recognized that his gruff exterior was really a cover for a generous man with a big heart and a great sense of humor.

Like any business that was fortunate enough to work for Jim we are a better company today than when we met him, and more important, we are better people for having known him. When Jim McGuirk reached the heavenly gates I know that his name was already on the VIP list as his countless good deeds over his lifetime had gone before him. To say that we will all miss Jim would be an understatement. We are glad that after his time of suffering he is at peace and will remember him in our prayers.

Our condolences to Chuck, Rick, and the entire McGuirk family on your loss. Jim was one of kind, demanding - yet could be surprisingly kind. He always did what he said, and said what he felt when he disagreed. He made us better bankers, and a better bank. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sandy, Chuck and Rick - so sorry about losing Jimmie he was truly a character and I loved his sullen dry attitude. You kids were the light of his life - you brought him so much joy. So sorry I won't be there to hug you - but consider yourselves hugged. We will all miss him very much. RIP Jimmie you deserve it - you have left a wonderful legacy. Jane and Loren Eldred

My heart goes out to you in your loss as I just lost my husband who was an old friend of Jim's. it is the hardest thing I have ever done. Jim would say chin up red, we're from the west-side no time for crybabies & then he would turn around and give a big wink. He teased me till this day about my red hair. He was a happy soul and wanted everyone around to be happy also. He is probably in heaven giving Tom the business about being buried on St. Patrick's day. He will be sadly missed. Good-by old Friend.
