Peter Fries Obituary

Peter Fries, 85, of Mt Pleasant passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at My Michigan Medical Center Midland. Peter was born on June 18, 1937, in Ann Arbor, Mi., son of the late Charles and Agnes (Carswell) Fries. Peter received a Bachelors in German studies from the University of Michigan and continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a PhD in Linguistics. He married the love of his life, Nancy McDowell on May 16, 1964. Peter retired after many years of Linguistics at Central Michigan University. He enjoyed traveling, birding, gardening, supporting many philanthropic organizations and clubs. Peter and Nan (It's hard to separate the 2.) were very active throughout their lives and around the world, promoting linguistics research and supporting those expanding the field. Included were visits to "Koko" the Gorilla, who used ASL to converse, and many other zoological organizations around the country. Their travels, by trusty van, included stopovers with family, friends, colleagues, and former students. Though they wintered in Tucson, surrounded by many friends, Mt. Pleasant was their home. Peter is survived by brother, Robert McMillan Fries (Leslie); many great nieces and nephews; and a world of "children, grandchildren" and communities of friends. He was preceded in death by both parents; wife, Nancy McDowell Fries in 2019; brother, Charles Carswell Fries; sisters, Carolyn (Carol) Fries Emshwiller, and Corinne Fries Dick. Peter's memorial service will be held at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, Mi. in late summer 2023, specifics TBA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. My deepest sympathies to the family and other friends. I was very fortunate to be a student of Peter´s when I studied for my Master´s degree at CMU. We continued to be friends and I was blessed to call both Peter and Nan dear friends. They were kind and caring people and I am honored to have known them.

Peter was a great academic friend: supportive, generous, willing to make firm, alternative suggestions about strategy whenever it was needed. He actively supported the development of the SFL journal, "Language context and text: The social semiotics forum", especially through his judicious blind reviews. He was a genuine scholar in the very best traditions of his chosen discipline. I am so grateful to have had the privilege of working along side him and calling him friend.

Bill and I were very sad to hear of Peter's passing. He and Nan were great neighbors of ours for 50 years and we enjoyed visits with them. We miss them both. Condolences to the family. Bill and Colleen Vogel

Sad to learn of the passing of this gentle soul. Peter Fries´ elaborate works on Textual meaning has been a monumental contribution to SFL. Nans and Peter´s were a most generous, humble and amiable couple; their cordiality always giving a familial aura to the SFL group.
Their material contribution to the Systemic Functional Linguistics Association of Nigeria (SYSFLAN´s) Library was incredible, and invaluable to the establishment of the group in its early years.
Condolences to Peter´s immediate family and to the SFL group.
