David Gray Obituary

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. David Thomas Gray, 89, of Florida, formerly of Hardin County, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, in Fort Myers, Florida, after a short illness.

David attended Baptist Bible College of New York for one year before receiving an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

David served in the artillery, became an Army ranger, served in the 82nd Airborne and subsequently served in the JAG Corps. He also served in Vietnam from 1966-1967.

After his 20 years of service, he retired and went into private law practice.

He enjoyed a successful private law practice in Hardin County, which included a stint as an assistant United States attorney in Louisville for a couple of years.

David accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior as a child and lived his life as a faithful follower of Jesus for the whole course of his earthly life. His passions after Jesus and his family were football and golf. He coached youth football for decades, influencing young men to become men and winning, winning, winning. He played golf regularly up until he was 87 years old.

A year or so after the love of his life Lois died, David met a widow named Ginger Mathis at church. They were married on David's 83rd birthday.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Clayton and Virginia; and his brother, Steve.

He was a great husband and father to his two sons, Tom and Paul. He also is survived by his sister, Susan Fiedler of Hatfield, Pennsylvania; two daughters-in-law, Dana and Jennifer; his five grandchildren, David, Daniel and Abigail and Paige and Katie; and a great-grandson, Jonathan.

The funeral is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home, 2072 S. Dixie Boulevard in Radcliff. Burial with military honors follows in North Hardin Memorial Gardens, 1100 S. Logsdon Parkway in Radcliff.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
