Anjishnu Kumar Roy
Oshkosh - Anjishnu Kumar Roy, 82, passed away June 24, 2019 in Chandler, AZ. He was born in Aurangabad, Bihar, India on September 8, 1936. Anjishnu Kumar Roy graduated with a Master's degree from Patna University. He was married to Ruma on June 12, 1965. He came to USA in 1962 on a Fulbright Scholarship. Anjishnu taught at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh for 36 years as a professor. He pursued his post-graduate work at the University of Liverpool, UK with expertise on the plays of T. S. Elliot. He was a co-founder of the Fox Valley India Association, captain of his soccer team in India and had a passion for tennis, table tennis, badminton, cooking, singing, and Hindu scriptures, mantras, and prayers. He loved to teach and read Mantras to his grandchildren.
Anjishnu was a leader and encourager with his family, friends and in the lives of his students at the university. He was good with words—whether the words were written for his original poetry and stories, or academic words in research and teaching, or his welcoming words as the community was invited into his home or his words of belief written for the many religious ceremonies for many people. His indomitable spirits and love of life made him inveterate presence in all occasions. He loved to listen and sing Bengali and Hindi music.
As a younger person, Anjishnu was tireless in creating social cohesion and cultural opportunity. Many of us will fondly remember participating in his plays, or celebrating landmark Indian historical moments, such as the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago. His play was broadcasted from All India Radio. His deep knowledge and love of Tagore and literature were expressed through countless fora: South East Asian Studies, Bengal Studies and Film Festivals. His knowledge of the Hindu scriptures and the Upanishadas enabled not only worship in his home, but also in officiating at weddings, funerals, annaprasans, and other special occasions.
Anjishnu expressed the joy he found in his growing up years, in his love for family and the traditions of his native India. He also expressed his gratefulness and pride in becoming an American citizen and the opportunities that it afforded him and his family.
Anjishnu and his wife, Ruma, were very supportive of their family of three daughters, three sons-in-law, and six grandchildren. You could tell that respect and love flowed freely between and amongst them. His grandchildren were a blessing of which he spoke many times. One of the biggest joys besides seeing them thrive at school and at home was teaching them the prayers and customs of his faith.
He is survived by his wife Ruma Roy and his children Semontee Simone Verma, Sandana Sandy Roy-Moder, Ranjini Raina Roy and grandchildren Srinjay Saayan Verma, Avanti Sarina Verma, Sarina Devina Roy-Moder, Jayden Sanil Roy-Moder, Samesh Roy Saker, Leena Saker with brothers Achint Ray, Abhijit Ray, and sisters Sukrishna Sarkar, Sudakshina Basu, Shukti Roy, Sucheta Roy Choudhury and Sushmita Das.
