Harold Carpenter Obituary

Carpenter, Harold J.

Harold J. Carpenter -Oshkosh, WI. June 22, 1927-August 10, 2013.

Our father, Harold J. Carpenter, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning August 10, 2013 at Evergreen Care Center. He was born to Elizabeth and Fred Carpenter on Regent St. in Madison, WI. The youngest of seven children, his brothers and sisters were; Joe, Agnes, Dorothy, Fritz, Roman, and Betty. He and our mother, Betty Carpenter, were married on September 13, 1952 in Madison. Together they raised ten children; Teri Carpenter, Larry(Mary) Carpenter, Carol (Nels) Naslund, Joan (Bill) Pike, Mary (John) Kupsch, Kathy McCallister, Paula(Chris) Brown, Margaret (Doug ) Gerth, Helen (Mark) Lira, and Lois (Mickey) Noone. Together there are 13 grandchildren in the family.

Harold was a man of many talents. He was a very good athlete. He played basketball for the 1945 Madison West State High School Championship team as well as playing varsity tennis in high school.

He served in the Navy Sea Beas at the tail end of WWII on the island of Guam. He played tennis for the UW Badgers after the war and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Art Education. He was also a very talented artist and did well in numerous state art contests. He sang Barbershop in various quartets and choruses for many years and really treasured the friendships he made-thanks Jack.

Harold and Betty moved to Oshkosh in 1954 and started Harold Carpenter Overhead Door Co. and they worked together for many years building the business. Harold retired in January, 2011, at that time his daughter Lois took over ownership of the business. He worked down at the shop until 2012.

Our father worked hard to give us a roof over our heads and food on the table, as well as a Christian centered family life. He was a serious man who also had a sense of humor and kept that sense of humor until his illness took over.

To honor our father's wishes, no memorial service will take place. However, he would like to thank all of the people who touched his life and those he helped during his journey on this earth. A memorial fund will be established and the proceeds will support the Alzheimer's Association. A special thanks to the staff at Evergreen for the great care you provided.

Pa, we thank you for a wonderful life!

I loved Harold. I worked for him in the early 80's and he is the best boss I ever had. We played tennis together for over 3 decades with Harold hitting a great shot saying: "Marc...your seeing 30 years ago". He will always be etched in my memory and with happiness :)

I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Carpenter, when bidding out some work. His straight talk and great personality will always be fondly remembered.

Hello my dear cousins,
I am so sorry for the loss of Harold. Your dad was my favorite uncle! I simply adored him . . . . always!!! He was still living at home when I was a little kid and we (my sister Kristen and cousin Pat Grady) had so much fun with him. One of my favorite memories was going to our grandparent's house on Sunday morning before church. Grandma gave me the job of waking him up. I'd run up to his room and jump on him - then the game was on!! I couldn't say my "R's" so I called him "Unco Hewold." Another time I was riding the city bus with my Grandmother Mittler and looked out the window to see him in his car next to us. I got so excited and demanded that we get off the bus right then and there so I could see him!

He was a very special uncle, a wonderful and talented man, and I'll never forget him.

Much love to you all and your mother!

My Carpenter Cousins,
What a sweet man we've lost. You are all in my prayers. Lois, I will forever be grateful to you for getting Uncle Harold to Papa's 90th birthday party almost two years ago. Those two brothers were so delighted to see each other! You've been an awesome daughter and an incredibly adept caregiver. Your dad, like mine, is reunited with his family in heaven.
Love, comfort & blessings.

Dear Carpenter Family,
Our deepest sympathy for your loss. Harold was a great guy. I will never forget getting our garage door repaired many times & he knew exactly what year he put it in & who we were & how long we lived at our home & our parents & that I grew up in Berlin & on & on....it amazed me how incredible his mind was & so funny & so many stories, loved chatting with him...he always made me smile! What a wonderful father you had! He was one-of-a-kind guy & will be missed. Thoughts & prayers go out to you & your family.

Teri and family:

Your father certainly was a blessing to you all and to many others by the sound of the nice writeup, which probably doesn't do justice to the true impact he made in this world.

Our warmest thoughts and prayers are with you.

My deepest sympathy to all of the "Harold Carpenter family". Harold and I have spent my hours hashing out the problems of the Overhead Door business. It was always a great learning experience and I always appreciated his lessons. The garage door world lost a great pioneer. RIP my Friend.

I would like to extend my Deepest Sympathy to the Carpenter Family. Harold came to fix my Broken Spring in my Overhead Door a few Years back, and I told him who my Father was. He knew my Dad, and said Very Nice things about him! It made me feel very Proud!
He never did send me a Bill for the Spring Replacement!! (Lois, don't get any ideas now.) He was A Great Man, and will always be remembered by many.

I feel very fortunate to have known Harold Carpenter. He was a great person and had a big influence on my life. My mother and I had a wonderful visit with Harold last fall. My thoughts go out to the entire Carpenter family.

August 11, 2013

Dear Lois and family...what a better way to pass the time than to come to the shop and visit Harold to discuss sports, Oshkosh events and world news. I will miss Harold and his quick wit, humor and sincere care for others.
How very quietly you tiptoed into our world Harold, silently, only a moment you stayed. But what an imprint your footprints have left upon our hearts.
Deepest sympathy...
