Richard Sielaff Obituary

Richard "Rick" Thom Sielaff, 57, August 24, 1962 - March 22, 2020, passed away peacefully in his home in Clarkston, Michigan, surrounded by his four loving dogs, on March 22. Born in San Jose California, Rick moved to Livonia, Michigan with his family, where he attended and graduated from Livonia Public Schools. Rick is survived by his three children, Weston, Calvin, and Meghan Sielaff; his six siblings, Carol, Donald, Nancy, Lois, Joan, Linda; his former wife Jennifer; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Rick owned and operated The Village Place Family Restaurant on Cooley and Elizabeth Lake Roads, which he opened in 1986 at the age of 23. Rick proudly served the Waterford community for 34 years with his loyal staff, most of which he considered close personal friends. Rick loved The Village Place and the neighboring community, sponsoring many local organizations, youth sports teams, and generously contributed to Waterford and Clarkston Athletics. Rick was passionate about basketball and high school sports, having played and coached. Most recently, he became very involved with Clarkston athletics, especially with the girls’ and boys’ basketball programs, serving as a bookkeeper and working the scoreboards. Rick loved his family, his crazy dogs, being on his boat and spending as much time as possible in Northern Michigan. Rick was always there for his friends and surrounded himself with amazing people. Richard lived life optimistically. He touched the lives of so many people with his kindness and larger-than-life persona. He will be dearly missed. A celebration of life will be held for close friends and family, to be decided at a later time.

My deepest condolences to Rick's family and friends.

My first job was as a hostess at The Village Place. I can see Rick in my mind right now. He was very kind and generous. For my high school graduation, he gave me a hot air balloon ride. It was an amazing experience that has stayed with me all these years. I feel lucky to have had my first work experience at TVP. I loved the team at TVP! I didn't realize it then, but now I know, that he built this great group and place to work.

My thoughts and prayers are with Rick's family and friends. Rest in peace, Rick.

On behalf of the Clarkston High School learning and athletic community I would like to provide heartfelt condolences to Weston, Calvin, Meaghan, and your entire extended family. We got to know Wes through his terrific children, and were fortunate enough to develop a friendship with him through his work with Clarkston basketball. Wes was thoughtful, insightful, witty, and showed an uncommon dedication to support young people in positive ways. His influence will live on through his actions and deeds. He will be missed!

We met Rick and Cal during a rough time in our family having just lost our Boxer the day before. He welcomed us into his home and he and Cal made us realize these were kind hearted people who shared our love for our Boxers. We have a puppy from his babies Kale and Bailee and we named her Kaleigh, also a nod to his son who was so kind to us and has a smile that lights up a room. Rick in a short time we felt as though we have known you forever. We wish you Peace Big Guy!

My sincere sympathy. It is so sad that he passed away so young. I have known Rick since he was a teenager. I worked with Jennifer and Rick at the VP. Take one day at a time. Take care

Every time I ever had any interaction with Rick he was always so upbeat and always greeted me with a big smile! Two of my sisters, carol klein and debbie klein both worked for Rick at village place along with a niece and two nephews! This will no doubt affect my family in a major way and I know they consider rick they're family! I'm so sorry for his children who I'm sure are absolutely devastated! God bless all!

My heart goes out to you kids! Rick was a great friend of mine and I loved him and truly miss him everyday! Our love for our boxers and having puppies where everyone thought we were crazy (we were) and I will do everything to keep our puppy name going "JimSie" I will miss our daily silly conversations and company as we could ground each each other back to reality because we sure understood each other. He was an amazing friend and I'm so glad I had the chance to know him and become so close. Until we meet again my dear friend. Rest In Peace
