I´m so sorry to hear of Tom´s passing. He was one of the first people I met when I came to Evergreen as a visitor, stepping in to take over for him while he was on leave to work on his writing. He was welcoming, funny, and full of good advice. He was a fine teacher and generous mentor to many students.

Tom was a friend and a confidant during his tenure as head of Evergreen's Writing Center. One October day in 1990 we spent a delightful afternoon together so I could make some portraits of him and his slide guitar (see attached). Tom was a terrific writer with an equally terrific sense of humor. I was sad to see him leave Evergreen and am now doubly sad to hear of his passing.

I just received news this morning of Tom's passing, and I'm very sorry to hear it. In 2012, Tom and I co-taught an Evergreen program called The Graphic Novel, which I was believe was the college's first full-time exploration of comics as an art and literary medium. Tom was friendly and flexible, and he took much time and care helping our students with their writing. (He also did not hesitate to tell them to cut the crap when necessary...) I enjoyed those times when we later crossed paths in town and had a chance to catch up a bit. Here's to Tom.

I'm so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was my first faculty member at The Evergreen State College, back in the late 70s. He introduced me not only to Shakespeare but also to some contemporary (for the time) science fiction authors. (Only later did I read some of his own sci-fi.)
I am grateful to Tom for his teaching; he was the first teacher to take my work seriously, and thus, to get me to take my own work seriously.
I will miss you, Tom!
