Dennis was and is an inspiration. Regardless of where I am engaged in our community his influence is there. His encouragement kept my eyes and heart open and was my prickly heat when it came to to new ideas, opportunities and possibilities.
In the late spring through early fall of 2004, I was one of the lead restaurant managers and employee chefs at Mount Denali Lodge in Alaska. I would frequently take long hikes on my time off. On one of those hikes I encountered a wild porcupine. As I didn't want to get injured, I paused and began talking with it. As I did the porcupine started to relax and became less cautious. It gradually turned around and posed for the picture above. I thanked them and they went on their merry way.
Dennis was like that porcupine in my life. He inspired me to keep my eyes and ears open and available to new ideas, others perspective, opportunities and the possibilities we get to experience in our lives and how we impact our community and others in a positive way.
He will be missed very much.
