Doris Millett Obituary

Doris Cowles Millett, 99, passed away peacefully at home on June 10, 2003, nineteen days before her 100th birthday. Born June 29, 1903, she was the daughter of Eddy Smith Cowles and Flora Beatrice Cowles of Manchester, Iowa. She lived most of her adult life in San Francisco, and moved to Olympia with her daughter, Marilynn, in 1998.She was the beloved mother of Marilynn Abel and Sandra Tarzan, of Olympia, and Edward Millett, of San Francisco; grandmother of Stefan, Aaron, and Jessica Tarzan and Peter, Jeffrey, and Jennifer Millett; and great-grandmother of Amanda Pacatte. One sister, Patricia Oslin, survives her.Doris married Clifford Millett of Delaware County, Iowa on July 3, 1925 in Chicago. They had known each other as children, and were married 66 years. Clifford passed away in 1991 at the age of 92.Doris worked for the City of San Francisco prior to graduating from the Christian Science Benevolent Association in 1965 as a Christian Science nurse. She worked at Ardenwood and with private patients. She was a member of the Ninth Church of Christ Scientist in San Francisco, and of the Mother Church in Boston.Upon her retirement she became a member of the San Francisco Scribes, a writing club, and the Martin Van Buren Fan Club.After moving to Olympia she participated in the Stars program at the Olympia Center. In November of 2001, at the age of 98, to commemorate a Veteran's Day celebration, she recited from memory the touching poem "In Flanders Field", which she had learned as a teenager.Doris enjoyed writing her autobiography, keeping a journal, reading, walking, singing the old songs her mother taught her, working crossword puzzles, traveling with her husband to Olympia to visit her daughter Sandra, and attending concerts.A memorial with her family is planned. Arrangements by American Burial and Cremation, Tumwater.
