Julie Hanson Obituary

Julie Hanson Julie Hanson departed this life early Sunday morning, September 14, 2014 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, after decades of dealing with kidney related health issues. She was born in Aberdeen, Washington, on February 7, 1949, and named Juliana Floor after the Queen of Holland thanks to her Dutch father and Norwegian mother, Tony and Thelma Floor. The family moved to the Tri-Cities in 1953 where Julie attended Richland and Kennewick schools, graduating from Kennewick High School in 1967. She majored in art at Central Washington University and married the love of her life, Bill Hanson from Sultan, Washington, in November of 1969. She was introduced to Bill, through exchanging letters with him while he served in the U.S. Coast Guard in Vietnam with Tony Floor in 1968. The letters became the foundation of building a life together. During Bill's 4-year term in the Coast Guard, the couple moved to San Francisco where their son, Shane Hanson, was born in 1970. Following Bill's Coast Guard duty, he went on to work as a Washington State Patrol trooper and ultimately transferred to the Olympia area beginning in the late 70's. Her career blossomed at the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction where she managed the Teacher's Awards Program until she retired in 2012. She loved to travel in Europe and together with Bill, spent recent winters in Rancho Mirage in the Palm Springs community. Julie's passions included traveling, gardening, interior design, culinary art, Nordstrom's shopping, homemaking, following the sun and spending time with her Springer Spaniel "Lola". She never complained about her health issues but always bubbled with enthusiasm and warmth when she was with friends and family. Beginning in 2006, she spent every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, from 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the DaVita Dialysis center in Olympia and approached these treatments as part of her job in life. In her behalf, the family is so appreciative of the care provided at the center. In the last two weeks of Julie's life, she received exceptional care by the doctors and nurses who serve in the ICU at St. Pete's. The family salutes and thanks this health care team. Julie is survived by her husband Bill Hanson; her son, Shane with wife, Angie, that includes her grandsons, William and David in Kingston. The grandsons have referred to Julie as "Grandma Wonderful!" She is also survived by her brothers, Tony Floor in Olympia, Fred Wolgamott, Union/Kihei, Maui, John Wolgamott, Palm Desert, CA; her sister, Jean Robertson, St. George Utah; along with numerous family at Hood Canal and throughout the Northwest. For all of us as friends and family who had the privilege to know and love Julie, she will be missed and inspire us forever. We can only know and believe, she is sampling pickled herring with Tony Sr. and Thelma right now. A memorial service to celebrate Julie's life will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, September 21, at the Lacey Community Center. In lieu of sending flowers please consider making a donation to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance in memory of Julie Floor Hanson.

Bill and Shane,
Bruce and I were impressed reading about Julie's accomplishments and lifetime travels. Even though we've been neighbors only a short while, she welcomed us to the "Steamboat Island" neighborhood with a plate of 'smoked salmon, cheese, crackers & fruit'. She always had a smile and positive attitude no matter how she felt. We and our other guests enjoyed her visit at our Christmas gathering last December. She will be missed by many! Remembering you & your family in our prayers.

Julie was a friend and colleague. She always thought of what she could do to make your life a little happier. I still have the beautiful french scarf she brought me from one of her wonderful trips to Europe. It sits on the back of my chair at work. The sky blues and sunshine yellows of the scarf lightens up my day. I will always remember Julie's wonderful smile and friendship. I will miss her.

Bill and Family,

Reading the obituary has filled my eyes with tears. It is true--Julie was loved by many, including me. She never complained, she was warm and friendly to all, and she truly was "Grandma Wonderful!" We bumped into each other maybe a year ago; please know that we had the best time talking about our grandchildren--she absolutely adored William and David. She also told me how much she appreciated the excellent parenting that Shane and Angie are giving their sons. Ron and I will be traveling so I apologize for not being able to attend the memorial. I know that Julie would totally understand. So very sorry for your loss. She was truly "Julie Wonderful!"

She will be missed by us on Steamboat Island as well. My wife Jerry and I looked forward to our talks with her as she walked her dog around the island and will miss seeing and talking with her. She was truly a wonderful person.
