Laurie Martin Anderson

September 15, 1949 - January 8, 2025

Olympia, Washington - Laurie Martin Anderson, born September 15th, 1949 in Taft, CA, passed away at her home in Olympia, WA surrounded by family on January 8th, 2025. Laurie was a loving wife and mother, avid hiker, scientist, mentor, and friend.

Laurie completed a nursing baccalaureate at the University of San Francisco followed by a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She then obtained an MPH in epidemiology from Emory University and a PhD from UCLA.

Dr Anderson's career as an epidemiologist began at the US Army 10th Medical Lab in Landstuhl, Germany. After returning to the US, she started a 30-year tenure at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where she had opportunities to work on the Behavioral Risk Factor Survey, International Health Promotion, and the Guide to Community Preventive Services. She concluded her career at CDC leading evidence reviews on stroke for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

Laurie was an editor for the Cochrane Collaboration Public Health Review Group and a founding member of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology. She also held an Affiliate Associate Professor position at the University of Washington, School of Public Health. Upon retirement, Laurie and her husband, David, served in the Peace Corps contributing to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts in eSwatini, Sub-Saharan Africa.

Laurie had a deep appreciation and respect for nature. She loved to hike and travel.

Laurie is predeceased by her father William Thomas Martin, mother Elizabeth Jane (Townsend) Martin, and brothers Michael T. Martin and Jack S. Martin. She is survived by her husband and partner David Walter Anderson, and their two children David Martin Anderson (Jessica) and Elizabeth Marion Anderson (Luca).
