Peter Berkley Taylor Peter Berkley Taylor passed away December 10, 2018 at home in Olympia, Washington. He was born December 1, 1933 to Berkley Tripp Taylor and Elsie Hallock Taylor in Yonkers, New York. A 47-year resident of Olympia, he also lived in Seattle from 1964 to 1971. Pete graduated from New York's Katonah High School in 1951, and received a B.S. from Cornell University in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, and married Virginia "Ginny" Niles on December 27, 1958 at First Presbyterian Church in Oak Park, Illinois. He then returned to school and earned a Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD in 1964, and did post-doctoral work in MBL, Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1964. Professionally, Pete was a professor in the Oceanography Department at the University of Washington from 1964 to 1971, and was a member of the faculty at The Evergreen State College from 1971 to 1996. Pete loved being out in nature. He was a keen observer and a strong advocate for environmental stewardship. He enjoyed travel and music. He was an active member of Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation and was a founding member of THEM, a popular Olympia-based men's hiking group. He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Ginny" Taylor; sons, Paul Taylor and Ian Taylor; daughter, Linda Taylor (Karl Christoffers); and grandchildren, Megan Taylor and Max Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Henry Taylor; and sister, Elizabeth Boyd. In honor of Peter Taylor
So sorry to hear of Pete's passing & sending best wishes to his family & friends
I had hoped to attend Saturday's service, but I am unable to do so. I wanted to share a few thoughts about Mr. Taylor's positive influence on all of us - his students. I was fortunate to have participated in the TESC Earth Environments Past & Present (E2P2 w/ Jim Stroh), & Tropical Reef Ecology (TRE w/ Dave Milne) programs; as well as serving as staff w/ him for the 2nd TRE trip.
Pete - in his quiet, unassuming manner - offered knowledge, guidance & encouragement, while promoting our own creative thought.
I communicated w/ Pete when we organized an E2P2 reunion & told him how he had so positively impacted so many. Importantly, I was able to thank him, & also share a TRE/Olowalu update. Here's a brief update & a few photos for the Taylor family & TRE alumni:
I have been able to return to Olowalu, Maui - Camp Pecusa (now known as Camp Olowalu) - first in 2010, thereafter, & this December. The photos include the extraordinary sunset sky on Dec. 10th..
Fortunately, much of the area looks familiar - the general store is still there! & some positive changes - the whale #s have increased, the cane field now filled w/ a young coconut grove, & a few pairs of the elusive Nene (indigenous Hawaiian Goose). However, our reef has been severely damaged - climate change & a new theory identifies the impact of sunscreen chemicals bleaching tropical reefs worldwide. The reef on Molikini looks much healthier - I suspect because it is offshore w/ currents (rather than warmer waters trapped along the shore)... Upon my return, I've also been able to hike several of the valleys previously visited & Maui's natural beauty, & the rich culture still graces this planet. We have Pete (& Dave) to thank for putting together such an unique experience, along w/ the knowledge & perspective to: see, appreciate & postulate.
Thank you Mr. Taylor! You have touched so many lives in so many ways.. rest in peace.
In Pete's name, I ask everyone to seek out sunscreens identified as reef-safe.
Again, my best wishes to Ginni & the kids'
