Ray Johnson Obituary

Ray C. Johnson Ray passed from this life on September 10, 2012 at Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend, WA, with his wife Katie and daughters Linda and Cindy by his side. He was born on January 2, 1930 to John and Lenore Johnson in Snohomish WA. After service in the Army during the Korean War, Ray attended the University of Washington, graduating with a degree in Marine Biology. A lifelong Husky, Ray cheered on his Alma Mater in all of their athletic pursuits. Upon graduation, Ray worked with the Dept. of Fisheries until his retirement in 1983. After retirement from the State, he continued to conduct stream surveys as a consultant for most of his remaining years. His passion and concern for salmon and their habitats guided him along most of the rivers and streams of Western WA for more than 4 decades. Ray married Virginia Stone in 1952. They had met while both served in the Army. They made their home in Olympia where they raised their 2 daughters, Linda and Cindy. After Virginia's passing, Ray moved to Marrowstone Island where he and Katie married in 1987. For the next 25 years they shared their life and love of all things that make Island living so special. Gardening, oyster & clam beds, wildlife for neighbors and spectacular views of the Sound, filled their lives with a natural beauty, which they felt blessed to be able to share. Ray also enjoyed his time volunteering with the Jefferson County Fair Board throughout the 1990's. A funeral Service will be held on Monday September 17, 2012 at 1:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Port Townsend, 1111 Franklin Street (360-385-2525), Rev. Dr. Robert E. Slater presiding. In lieu of flowers the family suggests taking your loved ones out for a dinner or movie.

Ray was a gentle soul whose stewardship of fish and wildlife benefitted the many citizens of Washington State. As a fish biologist with WDF, he was a pioneer in habitat restoration and an incredible resource and mentor to many folks in the WDF family who we all wish we could emulate.

My sincere condolence to the family.
