Stephen Wurst Obituary

Dr. Stephen F Wurst

AGE: 63 • Manahawkin

Dr. Stephen F. Wurst, 63, of Manahawkin, died Sunday, November 16, 2014 with his family by his side. He was husband of Cynthia Zook Wurst for 39 years. He was born to the late William and Dorothy Wurst on March 6, 1951 in Philadelphia, PA. Steve received his undergraduate degree at The Pennsylvania State University in 1972. He was a lifetime alumnus who bled "blue and white." Steve went on to receive his V.M.D. in 1977 from UPenn Veterinary School. In 1984, he established the Barnegat Animal Clinic, presently celebrating its 30th year anniversary. He was a highly respected advocate for the health and well-being of all animals, wild or domestic. He loved being on the water, truly passionate about saltwater fishing and sailing in New Jersey, Penobscot Bay, Maine and the Florida Keys. In his spare time, he was an avid craftsman of wood folkart. In addition to his wife Cindy, Steve is survived by his 3 children; Ben Wurst and wife Jen of New Gretna; son Dr. Andy Wurst of Waretown and girlfriend Jen Meehan; daughter Lauren Wurst Dombchewsky and husband Orest of Galloway; sister, Carole W. Fiorentino and husband Rich of Carlisle, MA and grandchildren, Kaitlin and Reed Wurst. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm, Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Manahawkin United Methodist Church, 116 Stafford Ave., Manahawkin. A celebration of his life to follow at 1pm at the Elks Lodge, 520 Hilliard Blvd., Manahawkin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, www.conservewildlifenj.org, would be very much appreciated.

My husband and I just found out about the passing of one of the dearest human beings we have had the privilege to know. Steve Wurst was our veterinarian since 1987. But he was a dear friend. The world will not be the same without that smile. I'm watching the animals, Steve, I won't forget! Namaste. ❤

Dear Cindy, Ben, Andy, Lauren, and family,
Your Dad was truly a remarkable man. I will always remember his visit to my classroom as a guest speaker (Ben, Andy). It was an inspirational highlight for the children and myself, which I have never forgotten. It greatly saddened me (just today) to learn of his passing. My heartfelt condolences to this beautiful family. It must be comforting to know, so many people loved him, too. You are in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you all.

I grew up on Bayview Blvd. down the street from Barnegat Veterinarians . He treated many of our family pets. A great person and a great Dr. !!

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Wurst's passing. I came to know him over a period of about 20 years while I worked for the pet memorial service that served his practice. He was recognized as a terrific vet, husband, father and man who always made people (and animals) feel welcome and cared for. He always exhibited generous and compassionate qualities above and beyond what could ever be expected. I wish Andy and family to find comfort going forward. Rest in peace Dr. Wurst.

Dr. Wurst was the greatest vet ever. He not only took care of our babies, but he took care of us as well. When we welcomed in our first Yorkie, he taught me what he referred to as "Doggie 101". I sure needed it. He always greeted the dogs on their level, on the floor, so as to calm them. Aside from being the greatest vet, he was a truly wonderful person, who will be greatly missed and graced the earth with total compassion and love.

We are greatly saddened at his loss, and shall never ever forget him.

Our heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Wurst and family.

Dr Steve Wurst was my animals vet, my neighbor and I always considered him my friend. I can remember several times when one of my furry kids got ill or hurt at night, running through back yards to his home to get help for my pups. He was truly a man full of compassion and kindness. I never heard anyone say anything unkind about this man. He was truly loved by all who met him. He had the ability to make you feel that you (and your pets) were the only ones that he knew. He helped me with my dogs, cat, bird and a multitude of wildlife that I have rehabilitated and released through the years. Our sincere sympathy and prayers go out to his wife and children and his entire staff at the Barnegat Animal Clinic. We were so lucky to have Dr. Steve on this earth...his passing was years too soon and he will be missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace Dr. Steve
