John Borcherding Obituary

Nov. 26, 1917 - July 22, 2013
Resident of San Mateo and Vacaville, Calif.
Loved dearly by his family, John (Frederick) Borcherding passed away peacefully on July 22, at the age of 95. Born in Brooklyn, NY, John was also a longtime resident of San Mateo, having traveled across the country with his young family by train from Brooklyn to reside in San Carlos in 1948. He was a hard worker, sometimes holding down two or three jobs, and, ultimately spent many years as a well respected Policeman and Detective Sergeant for the San Mateo Police Department from 1950 - 1973.
John was a loving husband for over 60 years to the late Jean Borcherding and father to daughters, Virginia Nimtz (Richard) of Napa and Louisa Davis (Kenny) of San Jose. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Gina Alemania (Rod) of Redwood City, John Savage (Jill) of Redwood City, Virginia Nicoletti (Brett) of San Jose, Julie Spencer (Steve) of Suisun City, Ken Henderson (Christine) of Naperville, IL and Stephanie McLaughlin (Chris) of Sunnyvale; 10 great-grandchildren, Gabe, Olivia, Stone, Isabella, Francesca, Alex, Kenny, Ally, Nicholas and Brandon; many nieces and nephews.
John lived a long, full life and was known by his family as a great storyteller of his experiences as the son of German immigrants, his years as an altar boy, and his eventful tenure with the San Mateo Police Department. As a Sergeant and Detective, John was involved with many of the San Mateo County's most high profile and newsworthy cases of 1950's and 1960's. John was granted an early retirement in 1973 for his years of excellent service. He enjoyed his retirement spending many years living in Napa with his wife Jean, where he cultivated a beautiful vineyard on many acres on Silverado Trail. His hobbies included, golf, collecting hats and raising homing pigeons. In 1993, he moved to Vacaville where he was a diligent and loving caregiver for his wife Jean until her passing in 2004. Most recently John lived at Aegis Assisted Living in Napa.
John's family will miss him greatly but his amazing legacy and memories will be carried on for generations. Services will be held at Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 180 E. Monte Vista Ave., Vacaville on Thursday, July 25, at 10 a.m. Procession to Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery afterward. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Nadeau Family Funeral Home 707-455-7700 www.nadeaufuneralhome.com.

John is my uncle and the last of that generation of Borcherding my mom was married to his brother Christian. Although they moved away when I was young I still have fond memories of he and my Aunt Jean. Rest in peace and I hope I live till I'm 95.

For sure my Uncle Fred was a great story teller...to this day I still remember my uncle (while a San Mateo policeman) telling me and my other cousins, about the time he was almost killed by a bullet that went right through his police hat brim, narrowly missing his head! He had the hat as proof of that harrowing event. God bless you Uncle Fred and may you now rest in peace with your wife and my Aunt Jean. Love, your Nephew Michael

Although I have never met John, as a member of the San Mateo Police Department I an proud and honored to call John my brother. It sounds like John lived a long and fulfilling life. May your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Although I did not know John, I can tell by reading this guest book how much he was loved and how he lived such a full life. I work for the San Mateo Police Department and have been here since 1986. I love hearing stories about the veteran officers and their quests to find the bad guys. I am sure that John was one of those officers. I am praying for the family and friends of this gentleman during this difficult time. "When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure". RIP Sgt Borcherding.
