Steven Seybold Obituary

June 13, 1951 - Feb. 17, 2014

Steven Wayne Seybold passed away on Feb. 17, after a tragic 30 foot fall at a meditation retreat center in Manzanillo, Mexico, when a railing he leaned on broke. He struggled valiantly to recover for seven weeks before he passed peacefully in a hospice center in San Diego attended by his two devoted sisters.

Steve was born June 13, 1951 in Washington D.C. His family moved to Fairfield in 1963 when they were stationed at Travis AFB. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1969, attended Solano College and went on to Cal Poly to earn a BA Degree in Journalism. Steve loved San Luis Obispo (SLO) and made it his home after graduation. He worked for the City as their first Crime Prevention Coordinator, and developed that program for 15 years, and later continued his employment with the Parks and Recreation Department before his retirement a few years ago. Steve was an active volunteer in his beloved community, being involved in numerous clubs, charities and local activities. He was a deep spiritual seeker and member of the Lemurian Fellowship, near San Diego. He loved adventure travel and wrote detailed travel logs to his friends about his journeys near and far. Steve was a kind and loving son, a protective brother, a generous and loyal friend and was loved by all who knew him. Personal relationships were important and he maintained friendships for decades and spent Thanksgiving and other holidays with his family in Solano County. He loved the Central coast, entertaining and cooking for friends, providing hugs to anyone he sensed needed one, and could recite poetry on the spur of the moment. Steve was generous, witty and honest. Anyone who spent time with him felt his warmth and kindness. He will live on in our hearts forever.

Steve is preceded in death by his father, John Rockwell Seybold; stepfather, Jack Felch, and his brother, John Rockwell Seybold Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Ramona Felch; sisters, Mindy Green and Lindy Desserich; nieces, Shannon Sebring, Destiny Granger-Kelly and Jaimie Seybold; great nephews, Anthony Sebring, Padrick and Liam Kelly; great niece, Lola Clevenger, and very close friends and extended family all of whom he loved.

Friends are welcome to join us in celebrating Steve's life on March 9, at 1 p.m., in San Luis Obispo at the Elks Lodge #322, 222 Elks Lane, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.

I have only recently seen Mr. Seybold's obituary. My condolences to his loved ones. I knew a Steve Seybold at Clark AB in the Philippines when I moved there in 2963 and am wondering if this is the same gentleman. Again, my deep condolences.

Steve and I went to high school together. He was always a sweet, kind person with a quick wit and a great sense of humor. He will be missed.

Steve was my walking partner for years when we lived behind the high school. If I wasn't out on the street at our appointed time, he'd come rap on my window telling me to 'get up-get up' until I'd get out there. We'd walk a three block radius over and over since my sons were little and sleeping in the house. There was nothing we didn't talk about. He was like a brother - right there across the street. He was never negative in any way about anybody or anything. Just a happy soul. Always had a big hug for me whenever we saw each other after that. I will miss you Steve. You were one in a million. See you one day...

Steven, Always a dear friend and sounding board, who loved to TALK about relationships, friendships and fun. Neck and shoulder massages were always welcome as well as the over abundance of food and drink on those Monday evenings. I'll miss you Steve, Always,

Steve was a gentle kind soul. The SLO Skiers were very lucky to have Steve as a long time member. He was always available to help out in any number of varied interest projects. He will be sorely missed by those of us who knew him well. Heaven is the recipient of a kind and giving angel.

It was with sadness that I followed Steve's struggles after his accident and sorrow to learn of his death. He was a wonderful person and friend to all of us and I am pleased to know that he was loved so much by everyone. He was a tireless volunteer for the SLO Blues Society where I knew him for many years. We have all lost a dear friend and companion

Shocked to hear of Steve's passing. We go way back to the Journalism Department in the 70's and kept in contact through the years. He was always a willing volunteer as a bar tender at our fundraisers. I will miss knowing that Steve is just down the street. His memory will live on.

I used to see Steve more often, and I was always happy to see him when he came by. Even after leaving the police department, he would come by just to say hello, because he was a nice guy. One of the people I missed the most, was Steve. Knowing he was out there living his dream, and having a great time with his life is wonderful to know. He was too young to leave this world. My condolences to his family.

I am shocked & saddened to hear of Steve's passing. We worked together at the SLOPD -- where he was the ONLY one to make use of my shorthand abilities! Such a generous, caring individual -- and I felt lucky to be on the receiving end of his poems & generous music cassette tapes! I got in trouble with my boss, the Capt., when Steve would give me the best neck/shoulder massage! It was when harassment in the workplace was just becoming a big deal! I had to make it very clear that it was all above board and sooo appreciated after long hours of typing up reports for the Dept. We joked about it a lot! I still have the set of glasses he me and Ray for our wedding-- I use them everyday! I will always remember Thursday nights at the old Sebastian's watering hole! He was a true friend when you needed one, and the world will miss this man who shared his charismatic ways with all people! Rest in peace, dear Steve!
