Larry Francis Cummins, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a cherished member of the Columbus community, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, in his hometown of Columbus, Indiana. Born on February 19, 1941 to Donavon J. Cummins and Nedra (Daily) Cummins. He married Carol D. Lucas on July 24, 1965 (recently celebrating their 60th anniversary). Larry's life was marked by dedication, service, and faith, leaving an indelible impact on all who knew him. He was endearing and admired to everyone.
A proud graduate of Columbus High School, class of 1959, Larry's commitment to his country was evident early on as he enlisted in the US Navy that same year. During his service, he bravely served on the USS Des Moines (CA-134) and the USS Constellation (CV-64), playing a pivotal role in the blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His time in the Navy not only shaped his character but also instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
After his honorable discharge in 1965, Larry transitioned to a successful civilian career. He retired as a facilities engineering manager from Cummins Engine Company, where his leadership and expertise were invaluable. His career journey continued as he took on a role as a sales representative with Dubois Chemical Company, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to excellence in every endeavor.
Larry's Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a devout member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher on the "A" team for over 40 years. His dedication to his church community was profound, and he was instrumental in bringing many individuals to the faith through his participation in the men's ecumenical bible study. His ability to inspire and encourage others in their spiritual journey was a testament to his deep and abiding faith.
Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home on 25th street. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (additional visitation one hour prior) Friday, September 5, 2025 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Teike and Pastor Tim Carter officiating. Entombment will be held at Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum with military honors provided by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Carol D. Cummins; sons, Andrew (Diane) Cummins of Franklin, IN, and Clark (Amy) Cummins of Portland, OR; granddaughters, Diesel and Riley Cummins; brothers, David L. Cummins and Donavon Gerald "Jerry" (Kay) Cummins of Kansas.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Donavon and Nedra Cummins; sister, Carol D. Legan; brother-in-law, Robert Legan.
