Melvin Morber Obituary

MURPHYSBORO -- Melvin E. "Coogan" Morber, 87, passed away at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2012 at his residence in Murphysboro.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2012, in Dutch Ridge Baptist Church in Pomona, with the Rev. Danny Miller officiating. Burial will be in Dutch Ridge Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 127, VFW Posts 7190 and 2605 and Jackson County DAV Chapter 69. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Dutch Ridge Baptist Church.

Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin was born July 23, 1924, in Jackson County, to William and Agnes (White) Morber.

He served in both the U.S. Marine Corp and the U.S. Army, and he served during World War II in the 24th division of the 21st Regiment of Company M and in the Korean Conflict, where he obtained the rank of staff sergeant.

He had been the maintenance superintendent at the former Styrest Nursing Home in Carbondale.

Mr. Morber was a member of Dutch Ridge Baptist Church in Pomona.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 127 of Murphysboro.

He married Ruth "Gerry" Baseden on Oct. 17, 1958, in Murphysboro, and she survives.

Other survivors include four children, Jacqueline Rains and her husband, Don Rains, of Carlisle, Doris Jean Morber of Granite City, Michael Eugene Morber and his wife, Laura Morber, and Sandra Lee Stroud and her husband, Shane Stroud, all of Murphysboro; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Ihle of Murphysboro; two half sisters, Barbara Crombar and her husband, Don Crombar, of Murphysboro and Betty Frank of Florida; one stepsister, Mary Easton of Murphysboro; lots of nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; many, many friends; his church family; and a lot of people who were not related who called him "dad" and "grandpa."

He was preceded in death by one brother; three stepbrothers; two stepsisters; and his parents.
