Roy McDaniel Obituary
He was born Nov. 26, 1915, in Felt, Okla., to Charles and Carolyn "Callie" (Myers) McDaniel.
Mr. McDaniel proudly served in the U.S. Army in the 816 Med Air Evacuation Squadron in World War II with the air evacuation unit in the European front from 1941 to 1945.
On Nov. 26, 1945, he was united in marriage to G. June Word of Sparta.
Mr. McDaniel worked for Elwyn's Dry Cleaning for a couple of years and soon after he began to work in funeral service on April 6, 1950, and graduated from St. Louis College of Mortuary Science in 1952. It was then that McDaniel Funeral Homes were established. Mr. McDaniel served the Sparta area as a funeral director/embalmer for more than 57 years until he retired at the age of 91.
He was active at Sparta Gospel Chapel for more than 58 years and attended Bethel Reformed Presbyterian Church in Sparta. He had also been active in Youth for Christ. He was past president of Sparta Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife, June McDaniel of Sparta; two children, Richard (Lois) McDaniel of Sparta and Vicki (Vic) Hamer of Sparta; five grandchildren, Amy (Seamus) Kloos, Leslie (Jeffery) Sauzek, Lindsey (Benjamin) Newton, Drew (Danielle) Hamer and Luke (Tracy) Hamer; 11 great-grandchildren, Cormac, Nora, Patrick and Kerry Kloos, Jared, Katie and Libby Sauzek, Samuel, Caroline and Elisabeth Newton and Elliana Hamer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mildred Stringfellow, who passed at the age of 97; his brother, Wilbur McDaniel, who also passed at the age of 97; and son-in-law, Eric Dearbaugh.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, in McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta, with the Rev. Robert Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, and 7:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to Bethel Reformed Presbyterian Church Roof Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Mr. McDaniel and his wife used to hold gospel meetings for young people when I was a child. I think it was called Gospel Hall. Forever grateful for the lessons and teachings about Jesus Christ I learned there. Wonderful Christian people. Prayers to all the family for he will certainly be missed..

So sorry to hear of Mr McDaniels' passing. He had many funerals for the Brown family in Percy. He was a kind, caring man and was so nice to us when my grandparents died. I know he will be missed.
