Scott Miller Obituary

CARBONDALE - Scott Alan Miller passed away suddenly from complications of Covid-19 on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020, in Carbondale Memorial Hospital.

Scott was born Jan. 22, 1949, in Evanston, to Sydney and Ruth Miller.

He attended public schools in Evanston and graduated from Evanston Township High School. Scott also graduated from SIU in 1971 with a bachelor of arts degree.

He worked for many years in the construction industry as a construction project manager and retired from SIU in 2000. He went on to serve in a similar capacity at The University of Kentucky. These are the basic facts usually seen in an obituary but they are not the most important aspects of his life. What is more telling is how many people loved him for his loving, kind and gentle way and his generosity of spirit. If you were his friend or family, he was forever loyal to you. He had a deep love for his children, Rachel Lindsey Miller and Natalie Joy Miller, both of Portland, Oregon; as well as his beautiful grandson, Arthur Laurence Allen, whom he was looking forward to getting to know and teaching to golf.

Scott had a passion for gardening, golf and swimming. He learned to swim at the age of 65 and was extremely proud of accomplishing this lifelong goal. He truly enjoyed his life and was the picture of health, exercising, eating healthfully and not smoking. In other words, he had no pre-existing conditions that increased his risk of death from Covid-19.

Survivors include Kim Hamilton Miller, his wife of 25 years; daughters, Rachel and Natalie; their mother, Karen Elizabeth Miller; son-in-law, David; grandson, Arthur; sister, Sheila Schwartz; and many, many cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date when his loved ones can safely gather. This disease is real, it is serious and it is deadly. Wear the mask, socially distance, if not for yourself then for others who may lose a loved one to the disease. one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen twenty one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen twenty one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen

I've known Scott since freshman year at ETHS. We became close friends often listening to the Beatles, waiting for the next album to come out. I think it was Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band when Scott called and I raced over. Scott introduced me to my first bread and butter and spaghetti sandwich. I remember him telling me his dad had a middle initial `C´ but no middle name.
After a few years in the Navy I went to SIU and was so pleased Scott was there. I studied in the Design Department; Scott was about to graduate. Scott introduced me to his buddies, Jerry and Jan and they were all crammed in this little house with their girlfriends. They all farmed this little plot of land at the end of the street and I´d go over whenever I could looking for Scott and the boys. We´d hop in the car and go fish for blue gill, go swimming in Crab Orchard Lake and rock climbing in Giant City. I still want to be smart and active and generous like Scott. I moved to the east coast for a few years and now am back in Evanston. We kind of lost touch. Some years ago, Scott told me he´d named his daughter Natalie after my mom. She loved that and knew and loved Scott too. Mom passed away, pre Covid, in October 2019 at the age of 96. A while back Scott sent me some photos that our mutual friend Carol had sent to him. For years I´ve wanted to get back down to Carbondale and see Scott. Last I heard he said he was moving to Portland where the kids and grandkids are. I grieve for your and my loss. We are entitled to that.

I read about your precious husband today. I am so very sorry for your loss. It truly breaks my heart that he was the picture of health and had no underlying problems. My husband is exactly the same way and even though he wears 2 masks and a pair of gloves anytime he goes in public, I really have never worried about him. Now I see that being the picture of health doesn't matter. How very sad, so close to the vaccine. I can't imagine how you and your family must feel knowing that this cruel virus robbed you without reason. I am praying for you and your family. God bless you and may you find some semblance of comfort and peace, especially during this first holiday season without your precious Scott...

I'm so very sorry for your loss. When I was reading about your husband's previous health it was just like my brother n law. Neither should be gone so young.

Miller family;
Am sadden to hear of this. Worked many years with Scott at SIU, he was a friend,co-worker and a joy to be around.
May God hold you in his arms and rest his hand lightly upon your hearts.
