Alan Harter Obituary

Alan Raymond Harter

St. George - Alan Raymond Harter, beloved husband of Mary Harter, passed away peacefully at their residence in St. George, Utah on December 12, 2020.

Alan was born on March 5, 1937, to parents Alvin and Lydia in Cedar City, Utah. He excelled in education from an early age and was actively involved in student government where he served as senior class president in 1954 at Cedar High. While attending CSU, he was a member of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corp and was the drummer for the Starlighters Orchestra. In his second year at CSU he became engaged to his classmate, Mary Ellen Mathews. They were married on May 31, 1957, in the St. George Temple where they were sealed for time and all eternity. He served faithfully as a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in numerous leadership and service capacities.

Alan graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business from Utah State University. Later he attended George Washington Law School where he graduated with honors. In the Fall of 1970, he began practicing law in the State of Nevada. His law career led to the positions of Deputy District Attorney for Clark County, Nevada, and then District Attorney for Esmeralda County, Nevada, while also running his own private practice. He practiced law in Las Vegas where he focused on family and criminal defense work.

Alan is survived by his wife, Mary; sons: Steven (Shelly), Mathew (Brandie), Mark (Valerie) and Craig (Robin); daughter-in-law, Lynne; 26 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren, and counting. He is preceded in death by his parents and oldest son, Stanley.

I knew Alan during many years working at the County Clerk´s Office, both in the Civil/Criminal Division and at Family Court. Alan was always a gentleman and always prepared for Court. He was an able advocate for his clients. In addition to a successful career, he raised a wonderful family and had a beautiful marriage. Alan was exemplary in every aspect of his life. May his loved ones find comfort as they reflect on a life well lived.

My favorite memory of Alan was listening to him practice drums in the basement, with a cobbled 45 RPM turntable, to the tune of, "Beyond The Blue Horizon" (Lou Christie). "Beyond The Blue Horizon, Waits A Beautiful Day", A wonderful song, accompanied well, somehow Seems even more appropriate now. Go With God!

What an amazing man. He was a great attorney and an even better person. He was a professional and spiritual example to everyone that came in contact with him. He was a dear friend to my entire family and he will truly be missed. There is a spot in our Heavenly Father´s Kingdom waiting for him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wonderful family. My life was blessed to have him as a Bishop many years ago. Always kind, patient, pleasant, and treated everyone as the Savior would have. R.I.P. Bishop Harter.

As a colleague of Alan's who worked with him at the Clark County District Attorney's Office between 1972-75, I want to offer my condolences to Alan's family. My memories of Alan were of a very capable prosecutor, soft-spoken, but tough when he needed to be, and always compassionate, objective and fair. I appreciated what he taught me as a young lawyer, which lessons about life I carry with me today. I am sure that Alan made a positive impact on many more lives and I was pleased to see that his son, Mathew, is following in his footsteps. We will all miss his kind and caring ways. Rest in peace.
