DeMoin Sorensen Obituary

DeMoin Sorensen

Cedar City, Utah

DeMoin Sorensen, age 89, passed away the morning of the 12th of May at his home in Cedar City. He was born April 24, 1928 to Earl John and Effie Jane Lamoreaux Sorensen in Mt. Carmel, Utah.

DeMoin lived in Mt. Carmel as a boy and went to school at Valley High School in Orderville where he met Lucy Esplin. DeMoin Sorensen married Lucy LaRee Esplin December 11, 1948 in the St. George Temple. They have five children. They spent the first four years of their married life in the Mt. Carmel area. They have lived in Cedar City for 60 years.

DeMoin worked as a sheep herder, drove cows to the Arizona Strip, worked at the iron mine, became a heavy equipment mechanic, then became a farmer at Mt. Carmel for many years. He enjoyed having his children and grandchildren come and visit. There are many memories of Easter weekends and 4-wheeler rides to the caves. Dutch oven dinners were always a high light. Many helped with the farm work and had fun experiences with DeMoin. He most enjoyed having the entire family gather together. DeMoin and Lucy loved to ride horses and went on many rides with the Iron Ranger Horse Riding Club. DeMoin loved reading his newspaper and was a Jazz fan and would watch every game. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Many grandkids mentioned to him they learned how to work from working with him because he was such a hard worker and how he continued through all the years of his illness finding ways to be independent. He was a great story teller and recently we heard some new ones. He was a tough cowboy from the good ole days and that helped him through many difficult years. He was at times a tease and right up to his last day his sense of humor showed through.

DeMoin is survived by his five children: Jolene (Dave) Clark, Spanish Fork; Bryant (Catherine) Sorensen, Ghana Cape Coast Mission; Calvin (Jaylynn) Sorensen, Cedar City; Stanley (Debbie) Sorensen, Cedar City; Effie (Roger) Chappell, Cedar City; 29 grandchildren; 62 great grandchildren. Siblings: Erlene Blackburn, Dale Sorensen and LaDru (LaRue) Sorensen. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Lucy, his parents, great granddaughter Kira Plumb, brother Earl and his wife Colleen, brother -in-law Laddie Blackburn and Sister-in-law Margaret Sorensen.

The funeral services will be Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 11 am at the Mt. View Chapel at 4050

West on Highway 56. Viewings will be Friday from 6-8 pm at the church and Saturday morning from 9 am to 10: 45 am. Interment will be at the Orderville Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Mosdell Mortuary, and all medical personnel who helped DeMoin especially Ethan Bunker from Alliance Hospice for their tender care.

I am so sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather. Somehow over the last two years of going to southern Utah to visit my mother in the care center in Cedar City, I have been there during the wedding receptions of some grandchildren of DeMoin and Lucy. I was able to shake hands with DeMoin again, my uncle. I have many memories of going to Cedar to shop and stopping to see my mother's sister Lucy and her family. One time when I was about ten or eleven, as we were getting in the car to go to Cedar, I had my fingers shut in the door of the car. They were badly bruised and cut. I don't remember my parents discussing any need of going to the doctor. Instead we went to DeMoin & Lucy's and he put horse medicine on my damaged fingers and they healed quickly! I was impressed.

I'm happy for DeMoin and Lucy that they are together again. I will be thinking of all of you during the funeral. I admire your strong sense of family and I think that came from your parents - such a good example.

Love,
Nellie Doornbos

Thanks for the memories

UNTILL WE MEET AGAIN
I have more memories with the Sorensen family than I have with my own family and was fortunate enough to express that to Demoin before his passing. He was a one of a kind. Some might say he could be as stubborn as a mule. I was never on the opposing end of those conversations. He was never short on words to express his views, that's for sure. He was a story teller, a cowboy, a farmer, and a man of stature. He was called upon by many for his gift of dowsing and he had a high success rate. That was one of my first memories of Demoin. "How does he do that." He even tried to teach me.....with no success, I may add. He was always kind to me and always greeted me with a smile and a handshake. My dad was an avid deer hunter and took all my brothers hunting. But when I was old enough to hunt, he gave it up. It was Demoin that took me out for the first time. I learned quickly that you had to be fast on the trigger to out shoot him..........I'd be lucky to get a bullet chambered before hearing a shot go off. He loved his family and wanted them all to be together here on Earth and for All Eternity. My prayer is that all the family members can come together to celebrate Demoin reuniting with Lucy and family members since past. That they will count the Blessings they have and the Blessings that Demoin has left behind. That their hearts may be softened to forgive as Christ our savior has done for us. I pray that all the family feels the Spirit of the Lord during this time of sorrow. I pray for these things and do so in the Lords name, Jesus Christ, Amen
