Earl Jones Obituary

Earl Harold Jones was born in Woodenville, Washington on October 22, 1919. He was married to Mary Caroline Hunich in Grand Coulee, Washington in 1939. Their first son, Terry, was born there in 1940. Their second son, Robin, was born in 1953 in Seattle, Washington. Earl was trained at the Bremerton naval shipping yards to be involved in ship building like his father, Iver. He was drafted into the Navy, however, in 1943 and was stationed on ships in the Pacific Ocean during WWII. When he returned from duty in the Navy he began a career of entrepreneurship. Between 1945 and 1955 he ran restaurants, a cigar stand, a drafting office and drove a milk truck. He founded Preferred General Insurance Agency in Anchorage, Alaska in 1955. His first wife died in 1975. Earl married Nona Bhagatram on May 23, 1973. He was an avid bridge player, golfer and reader of western novels. He loved fishing and traveled throughout Alaska fishing the rivers. He also spent many years fishing and setting crab pots in Peterson Bay where he built and spent time in his cabin. Earl was well-traveled - having been to China, Australia and New Zealand as well as throughout Europe. He maintained homes over the years in Hawaii, Alaska and Arizona. His friends and business partners will remember him as a man of his word who appreciated honesty and integrity above all. In business he could be very demanding but always strived for fairness. He many times said "a deal is only good if it benefits both parties equally". As Earl's good friend and brother-in-law said "Earl was generous almost to a fault. Always willing to help out family and friends." He worked hard his whole life to make sure he had a legacy to leave his family. Earl died of cancer on November 26th while visiting his winter home in Mesa, Arizona. He is survived by his two sons Terry and Robin; and nine grandchildren Jason, Caleb, Nicole, Amy, Josh, Jeremy, Aaron, Melissa and Morgan.

Earl was my neighbor, friend, and colleague in the Anchorage Rotary Club. For the last several years, he was a regular presence riding his one-speed bicycle around the Turnagain neighborhood in his signature top hat. In September, as I walked through the neighborhood, he was sitting in the sunshine, reading a Western novel. We visited about local politics and his plans to return to Arizona over the winter. We will miss him and cherish his memory.

My thoughts and prayers are with Earl's family in this time of sorrow. I wish I had had the opportunity to get to know Earl and his family. Iver was my favorite great uncle, and brother to my grandmother Mary Madalean Jones. Earl, may you rest in peace.

Earl was my uncle, and he was always good to me when I was a child. He continued that tradition with my own son in the late portion of his years. I am thankful and grateful for that.

There are not enough words in the world to describe what a great man our grandfather was. So many unforgettable wise words and lessons have been woven into my life from this man. We had the best visit a couple of months ago in Anchorage and made some great memories. My heart is so deeply saddened by his loss but he is with those he loves now and resting in peace with Him. Love you grandpa. Til we meet again , Melissa

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Earl's family. Earl was a wonderful neighbor and very good man. We love and miss him already as we talked about everything together and he rode his bike twice a day all around the neighborhood. Everybody loved Earl. He was a kind and very caring man for Nona always taking care of her. We once calculated together that between riding here and in Alaska he rode in the several hundreds of miles a year. He always loved coming into our home for our big Family Christmas breakfast. I also still remember my son at the front door hollering at me that Earl was trying to help a distressed neighbor. I ran over to be by his side as he performed the heimlich maneuver to help save the life of a neighbor lady who was choking on a piece of candy. He & we will always remember going to the Temple together with him.

Earl 'Jonsie' led a full life. I enjoyed sharing a table with him at Downtown Rotary. I'm sure he has a tee time with St Peter and friends. Condolences to his family
