Mervyn Bennion Obituary

Mervyn Sharp Bennion III

St. George

Mervyn Sharp Bennion, III

1949-2013

Mervyn Sharp Bennion, III passed away at his home in St. George, UT on June 30, 2013.

He was born on October 30, 1949 in Salt Lake City, UT to Mervyn S. Bennion, Jr. and LaRee Bennion. He attended local schools, including East High School. Merv was pursuing a business degree at the University of Utah when a special project with one of his university professors sent him to St. George for a six-month experiment to test the feasibility of opening a savings and loan corporation. This experiment expanded into years and turned into a lifetime profession and residency in that city.

Known to his family as Mick, Merv was famous, or infamous, for his keen sense of humor and word plays. He loved skiing, both snow and water, cars, and his family. He married Kristine Jones Moore in 1981 (later divorced), and they had three children, about whom he declared he aspired to grow up and be like. He was also married to and divorced from SuAnn Carter Cannon.

He is survived by his three children Mervyn Sharp (Ariel) Bennion, IV, of Pleasant Grove, UT; Madison Ashley (Cody) Irwin of South Jordan, UT; and Nathaniel Lorin (Carla) Bennion of Houston, TX; and his three grandchildren Abigail Dawn Bennion, Isaac Cody Irwin, and Ezra Bennion Irwin. He is also survived by his four siblings Robert S. (Syd) Bennion of Santa Monica, CA; John S. Bennion of Hamstead, North Carolina; Rebecca A. Bennion, and J. Michael Bennion, both of Salt Lake City, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Memorial services will be held in St. George, UT on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 1068 West Chandler Drive at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Avenue "N" Street, Salt Lake City, on July 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple in Salt Lake City.

Dearest Family, I am soo sorry that I was out of town when Mick passed away and the funeral was held. I see that there is a grave side service that I will come to. I am sorry that I couldn't be to the funeral in
St. George. I would have come had I not been watching grandchildren while their parents were in Europe on a business/vacation, (Wade & Valerie.) I hope family coming together gave some comfort to you all. My love and condolences to you all.

I have only one fun memory of Micky Bennion to share. I went out with him once to a prom and when we went out to dinner (I think it was after the dance), we all placed our order and what I remember is that Micky ordered "spring chicken". Well, we waited and waited and waited for our meal and finally found out that what was holding everything up was Micky's order! We all thought it was very funny and gave him a lot of ribbing about it, which he took graciously.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss and hope that you will feel heaven's comfort as you grieve.

I worked with Merv and it was one of the most joyous times! I laughed, I learned, and I grew as a person. I have told Merv stories ever since then. I know that God will never be the same once Merv gets there and pulls his finger - ok, folks you know he's going to do it, cuz he always told us that's what the tie meant. And, I have always looked for a can of Shinola. Ah, Merv, I love you and I take great joy in having you as my friend. God bless and keep you until we meet again.

Many great memories of fun times . . . Merv's sense of humor and unending puns--fun at Lake "Pal," the Blues Brothers improv, dressing up as Kermit the Frog for Tiffany's birthday, and more. Mick, Madison and Nathaniel are outstanding examples for all of us--our love and prayers are with you. Love you, Aunt Jill and Uncle Royce
