Barbara Mirmow Obituary

Barbara Loadholt Mirmow ORANGEBURG - Mrs. Barbara Loadholt Mirmow, 81, wife of Edward Victor Mirmow, Jr. for 56 years, died Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at her home in Orangeburg. Graveside service with the Reverend Ryan Tucker officiating will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the graveside after the service. Mrs. Mirmow was the daughter of the late Eva Crosby and Brunson Loadholt. In later years, Charles Covington became a caring stepfather to Mrs. Mirmow. Before settling in Orangeburg in 1946, the Loadholt family resided in the Bamberg-Allendale areas. In efforts to gain a college education, Mrs. Mirmow was successful in qualifying and receiving a Columbia College academic scholarship which included employment in the office of Dr. R. Wright Spears, the college president. She was president of the student body her senior year and a cum laude graduate. Upon graduation from college, Mrs. Mirmow was a school teacher for thirty years. Her first job was at Columbia High School, a position she held for three years before joining the faculty at Orangeburg High School where she taught for three years. For eleven years she taught at Orangeburg's Wade Hampton Academy and retired from teaching after thirteen years at the Orangeburg Technical Education Center. Under the leadership of Mrs. Mirmow as president of the Orangeburg Junior Service League, a canteen was located at the newly constructed Orangeburg Regional Hospital. From the onset, members of the Service League operated the canteen with all proceeds going toward scholarships for the area students. Many years later, after retiring as a school teacher, Mrs. Mirmow began authoring a weekly column "Your Grammar Is Showing" for The Times and Democrat. Mrs. Mirmow is survived by her husband; one daughter, Jeanie Gasque and her daughter Eva Gasque of Orangeburg; also three sons, Edward Mirmow III and wife Lisa, and their sons Vic, Nathan and Nickles, all of Lexington, S.C.; also Robert Mirmow and his sons Morris, of Orangeburg; and Dr. Dwight Mirmow and his wife Dianne and their two daughters, Meredith and Blaire, all of Lake Murray, S.C. Mrs. Mirmow was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Mrs. Frances Campbell. Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church, 1240 Russell Street, Orangeburg, SC 29115 or Grove Park Hospice, 1324 Grove Park NE, Orangeburg, SC 29115.
