Tucson, Arizona - Catherine Chiles Eaker died peacefully May 8, 2022 at the age of 93 in Tucson, Arizona. She taught in the Speech and Drama Department for 36 years at Columbia College and had a passion for Children's Theatre since her early college days at Furman University. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Gene Eaker. She is survived by their two daughters, Beth and Genie.

I don't know where I would be today if it had not been for Catherine. She unlocked a talent that I didn't know I had. She was a driving force in my life. I pray that you will feel God's love surround you today and in the days ahead.

Beth and Genie,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was a wonderful woman and I know you will miss her. Both of your parents played important parts in my Columbia College experience and I am grateful for their example and encouragement.

I loved her dearly. She was my and many others mentor. She was an inspiring teacher and director. She loved children and wrote many wonderful children's plays performed by her daughter, Genie's company, the Patchwork Players. Glad she's reunited with her husband, Gene. Love and deepest condolences to Beth and Genie.

Offering sympathy in the loss of your mother. My mother was Júlia Chiles who also attended Furman. Wondering is there a family connection as I also had an Aunt Lýdia, John R Chiles's Sister, associated with Columbia College. I know of a few Chiles in my family who also attended Furman as my father and I did. That is where my parents met. Too many coincidents not to be somehow related. I live in Columbia, SC. My heart goes out to Mr. Eaker, Beth, and Genie. Mrs. Eaker was a guiding force. I followed her lead by making sure that I presented at least 1 children's theatre play a year. I opened the show for free to the local elementary schools. Always the highlight of our season. I thank her for that inspiration! Blessed to have had the Eakers as teachers and mentors. Love to you all.

I am a CC girl and remember Ms Eaker very well. We called on her a good but from the Dance Dept! Loved her fancy flare.!
