Charles Harmon Obituary

Charles E. Harmon, Sr. LEXINGTON Loving husband to Betty Jean Dutton Harmon; blessed son of Harvey and Mertie Harmon; beloved brother to Jimmy, John, Sam, Joe, Paul and Dan; father of honor, character and integrity to Charlie, Jr. (Laura), Patricia, Jeff (Patti) and Chris (Nikki); grandfather and mentor of eleven; married to Betty Jean, in 1951, and the two of them celebrated 66 years of a Christ centered marriage. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and ardent Gamecock fan, Charles "Charlie" Harmon spent the majority of his almost 40 year business career as the people's banker. He was the consummate Southern gentleman. He was well loved by all; encouraging and edifying those around him. He served his country for eight years in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He donated time, money, energy and heart to the Lions Club. A practicing Christian, he served his church faithfully all his life. Known by many as "Uncle Charlie," he was a lover of the Christmas season and the message that Christ was born to save this world, and yet he preached Christ with deeds and sometimes even used words. He loved to play the guitar and sing, which always brought smiles and fond memories to all. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Pisgah Lutheran Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pisgah Lutheran Church, 1350 Pisgah Church Rd., West Columbia, SC 29169. www.caughmanharmanfuneralhome.net.

I was sadden to hear from brother Paul, that Charlie had passed.
My story of how Jane and I met the Harmon family is unique: In 1981 Jane and I decided to join the Gamecock Club, so our family, which loved sports could spend time on the weekends watching USC football. We decided to request end zone tickets, because Mr Louis Sossamon always let us use his extra ones. So we got tickets on row 31 North End Zone. The older gentlemen that was seated next to me asked me my name. I told him, it is Freddie Harmon, he smiled and said, I'm Charlie Harmon and asked where I was from and I replied Gaffney. His reply was my neighbor is from Gaffney. I asked what his neighbor last name was, he said Dan Mosley. Well, that's great, his Daddy lives right behind us and we just laughed.
We have all the respect for The Harmon family and have kept in touch. Then years later, met Paul Harmon through the UMC.
It could be that we are related, my grandfather is from the Newberry side of Lake Murray.
The Lord be with the Harmon family.

Mrs. Harmon, Chris, Jeff, Charles Jr. and (especially) Tricia,

Words do not begin to express how sorry I am for all of you. Mr. Harmon was as genuine and sincere of a man, as anyone I have ever come in contact with. I always enjoyed our conversations and knew that I was always in the company of someone that exemplified what it was to be a Gentleman. I am honored to have called him a friend. I will always be thankful for his and Mrs. Harmon's generosity towards me.
God Bless You Charlie (Mr. Harmon)
Much prayers and love,
Long
