Chip Amaker Obituary

Daniel B. Amaker, Jr. "Chip" COLUMBIA- Daniel B. "Chip" Amaker, Jr. passed away on June 22, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. Chip was born to Dan and Leo Amaker on June 4, 1955 in Dalton, GA. and moved as a young child to Athens, GA. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, Terry School of Business, and his Master's in Business Administration from Georgia State University. Although Chip loved his Bulldogs, he ultimately realized that life would be easier if he also adopted his wife's beloved Clemson Tigers as his other team, often traveling across the country to see them play. Chip began his banking career in 1977 at Trust Company Bank in Atlanta where he emerged as a young leader, serving as the president of the Atlanta Jaycees in 1983. Shortly thereafter, Chip was introduced to the love of his life, Mary Beth DuBose. They married in 1984, and after living in Dallas, TX, Spartanburg, and Easley, they finally settled in Columbia, SC. Chip was a senior vice president at BB&T and had a long and successful career. What Chip enjoyed most about his profession was his relationship with customers. He was at times larger than life and possessed an uncanny ability to make everyone feel like they were the only one in the room. Chip was an avid fan and supporter of Heathwood Hall athletics, where his three sons competed. His presence was felt by fans and officials alike. Chip's passion for helping young people was apparent in his contributions to the Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America, where he served as president and a member of the Board of Directors. In addition, Chip served as chairman of the Board of Directors for EdVenture Children's Museum. Chip's commitment to giving back to the community was rooted in his deep faith. He was a long-time member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and elder. Chip's desire to share his Christian faith with others was evidenced by his participation at Eastminster as a Sunday school teacher, Kerygma leader and Bethel Bible study teacher. Through his leadership as chair and moderator of the New Church Development Committee of the Presbytery, Chip was instrumental in the founding of several new churches in the Midlands. Faith, family, and friends gave Chip his true sense of purpose. He will be missed by all, most especially, his adoring wife, Mary Beth; his three sons, Richard, Rhodes, and Belton, and his daughter-in-law, Rhodes's wife, Nancy. He is also survived by his brother, Mack Amaker; father-in-law, Mac DuBose; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the medical staffs and caregivers at MUSC, Sandpiper Rehabilitation and Palmetto Health Richland. A celebration of Chip's life will be held at Eastminster Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at the Church in Thompson Hall. Members of Chip's Friday Morning Men's Bible study group will serve as honorary pallbearers. A private burial will be held at Limestone Methodist Church in Orangeburg, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Chip's name to Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Rd., Columbia, SC 29204 and Boy Scouts of America, Indian Waters Council, 715 Betsy Dr., Columbia, SC 29202.
