Mr. McCarthy worked as director of food services for Karns City Schools in Pennsylvania and ran a small family restaurant with his wife, Hildegard, in Butler, Pennsylvania. Having served two tours of duty in Columbia in the 1950s, he decided that it was a good place to live and escape the harsh Pennsylvania winters and moved his family to Columbia, South Carolina in 1977. Mr. McCarthy worked a number of full and part time jobs here before his final retirement at age 72. Dan met his wife Hildegard in Bad Tolz, Germany in 1948 and he especially loved to spin tales of how he chased her until she finally caught him. Married on October 31, 1953, they enjoyed 57 years of love, laughter, lean years, good times and made many happy memories. They loved to travel and made several trips to her family home in eastern Germany after the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989. In his later years he often said that his greatest accomplishment in life was becoming a grandpa. He adored his granddaughter, Katie, and devoted himself to loving her as much as possible from the minute she was born.
Survivors are his wife, Hilda; son, Daniel and his wife, Susan; and granddaughter, Katie. Mr. McCarthy was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Dave, Frank and John.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1911 Audubon, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 30. Graveside service with full military honors will be held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 1.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. McCarthy's memory to Paws4Vets at P.O. Box 491 Round Hill, VA, 20142-0491.
Finally, the family wishes to thank the staff of Carolina Health for their loving care of our husband, father, and grandfather. www.barr-price.com (803)356-4411
