David Childs Obituary

David Augustus Childs, Jr.
February 1, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - David Augustus Childs, Jr., 71, passed away February 1, 2022, after a long battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022, at St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church. It is requested that attendees please wear masks in deference to immune-compromised family members.
David was born in 1950 in Columbia to David Augustus Childs, III, and Betty Carlisle Childs.
A graduate of USC and former head cheerleader, David was a huge fan of Gamecocks athletics, especially baseball. He retired from a successful career at SCANA Corporation in 2020. David always felt at home on or near the water, especially at Pawleys Island. His friends and family will remember David's infectious, upbeat demeanor, as well as his generous spirit.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his grandmothers, Arney Robinson Childs and Sarah Dargan Carlisle Tiedeman.
He is survived by his daughter, Carlisle Childs Adams Hernandez and her husband Steve, and his grandchildren Maddie and Augustus (Gus) Hernandez. Other survivors are his sister, Betsy Childs Adams and her husband Crosby, and his nephews Michael Adams, Charley Adams, and Richard Adams and his wife Ginger, and his grandniece and grandnephews Anna, Jack, and Noah Adams. His partner, Darlene Freeman, was especially dear to David and to his family.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pawmetto Lifeline or to Harvest Hope Food Bank.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com.

It´s safe to say that my Cousin David was also my best friend during the years we were in Columbia We were doing something together every weekend . I write here mostly for younger relatives I have never and may not ever meet If character traits and propensities are to a small extent transmitted genetically and to a large extent by remembrances related by family I am confidant that recommending that you ask your older relatives persistently for facts and remembrances about David and his forbears
I will share two . Did you know that David´s father was a beach master at the Normandy invasion? Did you know that David turned down an offer of a new identity at a time where there was every reason to believe he would be killed by members of a drug cartel ? David did not take the offered protection since he wanted lo live around family.

I worked with David at SCANA and he was always helpful and a pleasure to exchange ideas with. A genuinely good person who all will miss.
