My wife, Kathi had privilege of getting to know DJ at DFHS-seeing him in the hall & teaching with his mother. I got to know DJ at church, usually asking him about how he played the Friday before & who was up next the following week. I remember going to his graduation party at the Monroe's home before he headed off to Havard. DJ was a tremendous young man-a brilliant, kind soft spoken guy whom everyone loved then & misses now. I don't think I have ever met anyone who was more talented than DJ...I suppose God need him for something which is bigger than this world. My prayers go out to the Dexter, Volonda & the rest of the Monroe family. God Bless.

So sorry for the loss of such an outstanding young man with such a promising future. I did not know him, but I knew his great-grandparents, Fred and Laurentine Black and they were wonderful people. From his obituary I can tell he was an outstanding young man himself. So sorry he moved to our little town and this tragedy occurred. Please know you have my heart felt sympathy and you are in my prayers.

On behalf of the Summey family I extend our deepest sympathies to you during this time. We will remember the many positive times we had with DJ when he would come by during his high school and colleges years and after. A special friend to our daughter, prom date, cotillion escort, he was number one in our book. He enjoyed all aspects of life and his personality and intelligence made him a magnet that enabled him to attract all types of people into his life thus adding to the quality of his life. He was loved by many and will be missed. People of faith know he is in a better place but will lean on their faith to get them through their sorrow during this time. Please know that you are in our prayers. God Bless you, Kenzil Summey

October 22, 2015

To the family & friends of DJ,

I am very sorry for your tremendous loss, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I have known DJ for just 4 years, and this has crushed me pretty hard, I cannot imagine how painful this is for all of you down South. Find peace and strength in that DJ made more positive impact on more lives in his short time with us, than a lot of people do in a lifetime three or four times as long.

I remember the first time I met DJ. I work as a security officer at the university dorm where he lived for his last 3 years in Cambridge. My very first day on the job, DJ, along with 2 or 3 of the other rather large Crimson defensemen approached my desk together. At first I thought it might be the end for me, I thought "this is gonna leave a mark". Although not what I expected, it did leave a mark, an indelible mark on me. He (DJ) introduced himself and the others, welcomed me to the house, and told me to "come get us if anyone gives you any trouble here." That was my first up close exposure to student athletes at Harvard, specifically the Crimson Football squad, and it's an impression I won't forget. Since then, I've become a big fan of Crimson Football, maybe more so the guys who represent it. Whether Coach Murphy seeks these guys out, or he and his team cultivate them while they're at Harvard, they are, by far, both the greatest gentlemen, and the most fierce of warriors, and DJ was a true testament to this and the exact model of both. Often times, I would bring my granddaughter and nephews to the home games with me, DJ would autograph programs for them, pose for photos with them, and even play catch on the field with them after the game. He was never in any hurry to leave, it was obvious that he was not doing these things for the kids out of obligation, rather he took a personal pride in giving back and positively impacting others' lives whenever and however he could. He also took a personal pride in who he was, and I took a personal pride in telling the kids, "this is my friend". When I told the kids about this tragedy, without hesitation, they said "number 36?". They knew exactly who DJ was, and they were saddened by this news, my 9 year old granddaughter actually asked if she could accompany me down south this weekend to say goodbye to "her friend".

Over his last 3 years at Harvard, I got to see DJ perform off of the playing field just as much as I did when he suited up for battle. I saw him day and night, weekday and weekend, off season and on, during final exams and during holiday break. He performed no less fabulous at any time, in any other area of his life, in any of the roles he played, or in any of the many prestigious circles of remarkable individuals that he belonged to, and represented with distinction. His demeanor, his positive attitude, his smile, his sense of humor, his work ethic, his drive, his style and swag will all be greatly missed, but not at all forgotten. Not by me, and not by anyone that ever knew him.

Whether it is the Monroe family, Dutch Fork, the great state of South Carolina, Harvard University, Adams House, Crimson Football, FSU, maybe many others I don't know about, DJ will be remembered by many others lucky enough to have shared those exclusive circles of greatness alongside him. I will remember DJ for a far greater and honorable circle than all of the others. I will remember him for this circle because he was the only one in it.

A class of his own.
One in a billion.

Rest In Peace, DJ.
You will be sorely missed.

Your friend,
Bill Oliverio

To the Monroe family: Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in your loss. DJ was a trusted friend and treasured teammate of our son James at Harvard. He was such a polite, friendly and gracious young man when we interacted after football games. We were so proud to follow his accomplishments as he pursued his dreams after graduation. Be comforted to know that he was well loved and respected, and that the world has lost a good man.

Dear Monroe Family,

Words cannot express what DJ meant to those that loved him. The Obukwelu family sends our prayers and are here if ever you need ANYTHING.

DJ was my teammate and brother. He and I would spend nights in our dorm room talking about all of the events that led us to Harvard, and how similar our upbringings were; both coming from hardworking, blue-collar families. This loss still hasn't set in and I doubt that it ever will. DJ inspired me to reach my full potential and without him, I wouldn't be the person I am today.

Love,
Nnamdi Obukwelu & Family

I didn't personally know Dexter, but he worked with my husband for the last year. My husband came home so many times talking about this great young man at his office. He was friendly, funny, and a hard worker. I've heard so many great stories about Dexter: funny stories, sweet stories about his grandma cooking him amazing food, stories about the great work he was doing. I wish I could have known him and our hearts are broken for his family.
