Eugene Lilliewood Obituary

POMARIA - Dr. Eugene Wade Lilliewood Sr., beloved husband, father and physician, entered into eternal rest after a long illness on Wednesday, April12, 2010, in the Veteran's Administration Nursing Home in Anderson, SC.
 
Dr. Lilliewood was born in Clinton, SC, February 11, 1932. Dr. Lilliewood spent his formative years in Newberry, SC, where he was raised by his mother, the late Bernice Rutherford. Dr. Lilliewood spent his teen years in Washington, DC, where he graduated from Dunbar High School in 1950. Immediately following graduation, Dr. Lilliewood enlisted in the United States Navy and went on to serve as a hospital corpsman with the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. Upon completion of his military service, Dr. Lilliewood attended and graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, SC, in 1957. He then continued his education at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, where he earned his M.D. in 1962. Dr. Lilliewood had a long and distinguished career as an obstetrician and gynecologist. His practice of medicine spanned over 40 years. From 1967-1993, Dr. Lilliewood maintained his private practice and held attending physician positions at various hospitals, in Ohio, Texas, and South Carolina. Dr. Lilliewood was chief of the Gynecology Department at Providence Hospital, Columbia, SC, from 1979-1981 and chief of Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Richland Memorial Hospital from 1983-1985 and chief of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, SC, from 1985-1987. Dr. Lilliewood became affiliated with Beaufort Jasper Comprehensive Health Services in 1993, where he was acting chief of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department from 1998-2003, and remained there until his retirement in 2006. Dr. Lilliewood was an excellent mentor and instructor, and assisted in the education of medical students at the Medical University of S.C., the University of S.C. School of Medicine and Baylor University Medical School. Dr. Lilliewood completed extensive post-graduate work at various institutions, to include Harvard Medical College, and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Dr. Lilliewood was a Fellow of the American College of Gynecology, a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the National Medical Association, the Palmetto Medical Dental, Pharmaceutical Association and the S.C. Medical Association. He was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a founding member of North Minister Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC, and a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dr. Lilliewood will be remembered for being a compassionate and empathetic medical professional who was trusted and who always provided an open ear to his patients, peers and family.
 
Dr. Lilliewood is survived by his wife of 46 years, Emma Laura Goodwin Lilliewood of Pomaria, SC; sons Col. Eugene Wade Lilliewood Jr (Melissa) of Stafford, VA, and James Jeffries Lilliewood of Brooklyn, NY; and one grandson, Eugene Wade Lilliewood III, of Hampton, VA.
 
Service will be held 12:00 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at the graveside in M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veteran's Cemetery, Anderson, SC.

I had the pleasure of practicing with Dr. Lilliwood in Beaufort from 1994 until his retirement. He leaves of legacy of outstanding professionalism and patient care.
