Mr. Roberts died Tuesday, March 24, 2009. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Gus and Amy Hampton Roberts. A 1961 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, he continued his education and graduated from Hampton Institute with a BA degree in Engineering, and received a MA degree in Architectural Engineering from SC State College. He was the owner of Gus Roberts and Associates Architectural Firm and retired in 2004 from SC State University where he was a Professor of Engineering.
Gus served as a Captain in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam Conflict, was a current member of the S.C. Combat Veterans Group, The Military Order of the World Wars, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He was dedicated to his St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church family where he served in many capacities. In the community he was currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Work Force Investment Board, as Board Member and Past President of the Southeastern Employment Training Association and he served as a member of Richland County Council.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife, Saran H. Roberts; children, Tanya Roberts, Stephan and Regina Roberts, Arnett and Samantha Gardner and Cory and Kimberly Hunt; siblings, Jimmy L. Roberts, Helen R. and John Hollis and Mary R. White; a host of grandchildren; and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

I am very sorry for your loss. I remember Mr. Roberts being at the Airport where I am employed many times attending meetings. He was always a nice gentleman and a wonderful architect. He will truly be missed by all.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Gus was the consummate gentleman and a true professional. I got a chance to know him during the late 80's-early 90's when he was chairman of the Procurement Review panel. He was a very smart man with great business acumen and he will missed greatly.

Saran, Stephan and Tanya I will miss Gus. He was a good man and would keep you laughing. Although I hadn't seen him in awhile, he was still cuz and always happy to see me or me see him.
