Jack Mobley Obituary

Jack D. Mobley COLUMBIA - Jack D. Mobley, 80, of Columbia passed away Friday, May 11, 2018. Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Mr. William Dixon Mobley and Mrs. Blanche Foster Mobley. After graduating from Spartanburg High School, Jack attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia where he met and married Mary Johnson, his pretty little student nurse from Greenville. Jack served in the South Carolina Air National Guard from 1958-1975. He was commissioned to active duty in the U.S. Air Force and deployed to Spain during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. Jack enjoyed a distinguished thirty-one year career with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, working in the areas of highway design, planning, and construction for statewide road projects. After his retirement as State Road Engineer-Design in 1988, Jack joined Lott Parrish and Associates (LPA), transportation consultants where he was a vice president until his second retirement in 2008. During his career, he designed and managed a variety of projects including the John's Island Parkway, the Isle of Palms Connector, the Florence to Conway Connector, and the Western Corridor in Greenville. He was perhaps most proud of his work on the Lake Murray Dam Project for which he was recognized before Congress by Congressman Joe Wilson. Jack served as a member of the South Carolina Section of the American Council of Engineering Companies for five years, serving as SCACEC President in 2006-2007. He was also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Association of Highway and Transportation Engineers, and a member and past secretary-treasurer of the South Carolina Society of Engineers. Jack was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Bussell, her husband Lee Bussell, and two grandsons, Lee, Jr., and Chase. He was a member of the Joy of Living Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church Columbia, and an ardent Gamecock fan. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel. Visitation will follow in Ellis Hall. Entombment will be Wednesday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery in Greenville, South Carolina. Memorials may be made to the Project: NEXT fund at First Baptist Church Columbia. The family wishes to acknowledge the doctors, nurses, and staff at Palmetto Heart Hospital CCU for their care and compassion. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel is assisting the family.
