Ah, old chum and cousin. Many fun times in Wytheville in our teens. Remember when the same cop ran us out of the pool room and then later pulled us over for spinning wheels pulling out of the Derby? You did good!

Thanks, Dr Copehaver, for letting Ray Fifer in the marching band; it being the one thing he missed in college as WMC did not have a marching band.

Cope, The words have been said and echoed by many, but your contributions to the band community will live of forever. You are the reason that so many bands in South Carolina have evolved to be successful. You have shared your vast knowledge and love of wind band literature to band directors and students throughout the country. Your students from USC are great disciples of your passion for quality band performances. You have shared this knowledge with every band, directors and students, whom you have had opportunities to conduct in clinics, or to adjudicate in festivals. Thanks for being a brother, and sometimes a father to so many of us. My memories performing under your direction with Palmetto Concert Band, our golf games, and our trips to Orlando and Chicago will stay with me forever. Thanks for your support and encouragement throughout the years with my programs, and for sharing the podium with me at Midwest Clinic. Rest in Peace my friend.

Hey Cope! I never had you as a director, I was too young, the youngest of the Needham kids at Holmes High in Covington, Ky. But my, what a director and teacher you were! Although you said 'girls don't play drums' and so I ended up with the licorice stick! Girls do now and very well!! But that's okay, found out I don't have co-ordination!! You were the best at bringing out the best in every musician in every band, you wrote great contest programs and I remember you well as a young kid and you and your life teachings with music was a great legacy to leave. Knowing Jim as a classmate at Morehead State University, I feel sure he gave his all to his students, colleagues and friends throughout his career. Without a doubt, Jim made a positive difference in thousands of lives, both personally and professionally. He was always a driving force in music education, especially in the area of band performance. I, like many of his fellow MSU classmates, admired and respected Jim as a friend, for his musical knowledge, talents and skills. That legacy, I am sure, will be left to all that knew him. R.I.P.

I am still living the dream that you started for me when you became my band director at Holmes High School. Being the great teacher that you were, you made all of it happen for me. You set the course for my life and future. Thank you, Mr. Copenhaver, my teacher, counselor, mentor, inspiration and friend. It is hard for me to even imagine what I would have missed had you not walked into the Holmes High School band room. Thank you for all that you did for me and my family. You were a person who made a difference and you continue to influence my life.

Jim, what a positive influence you were to me as a freshman in the Clemson Tiger Band. Your leadership, musical talent and inspiration will be greatly missed throughout the state of South Carolina. Between you and Bruce Cook, our Tiger Band Director for so many years (recently deceased), I am sure that heaven will not be short on funny band stories for a very long time.

Dear Family and Friends,
Please know you have our most sincere sympathies. Mr. Copenhaver was a great band director and I enjoyed every minute of my time in the Carolina Band and the Symphonic Band at USC. I will miss him and his unique humor. All Kappa Kappa Psi brothers have lost a special brother indeed.

What I owe personally to this man is hard to put into a few words, but I must try. Thank you, Mr. C, for your dedication and tireless efforts at helping us to understand that the "gain" is indeed worth the "pain". You showed us how to be musical champions at Holmes High School in Covington, Kentucky, back in 1966, and I will never, never forget you for that life lesson. I have imparted that lesson to our children, and I am so grateful that our older son had the opportunity to meet Jim Copenhaver personally in 2010. God rest your hard working, unselfish soul, and may the Lord be with your loved ones in the days to come.

Mr. Copenhaver, I think you know, still, othe influence you had on thousands of people. Myself included. You allowed me and helped fashion me not only as a musician, but also as an adult. You are a mentor in the true sense of the word for countless band members. I am so proud of my association with you in your first 5 years at USC. Thank you for all you have done, from this Gamecock Trumpeter. With love from me and my family, all of whom have a love of music. Forever to Thee, Wayne Mosley 1976-1980.

Everything I know about band I know because of Jim Copenhaver, as all my band directors were students of him as well. Most thankful he took the time to encourage me as a young Gamecock to never settle for less than perfection. Everything I am, I owe to him. Rest in peace dear friend.
