James Edwin "Ed" Summers Jr.

James Edwin "Ed" Summers Jr. RICHMOND, Va. - James Edwin "Ed" Summers Jr., 79, of Richmond, VA, formerly of Chapin, SC, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edwin Sr. and Irene Fry; and his sister, Joan Summers Drummond. Ed is survived by his wife, Suzanne B. Summers; daughter, Amy Summers Creason (Mark); stepdaughters, Meg F. Rawls (Bill) and Jenny F. Young (Larry); six grandchildren; and other cherished family members and friends. Born in his childhood home in Gibsonville, NC, Ed graduated from North Carolina State University before serving in the Army and Army Reserve for six years. He subsequently built a career in Human Resources and retired from Diamant Boart America. He resided in Chapin, SC, on Lake Murray for over four decades before moving to Richmond, VA, in his last years. Ed was an avid sailor and loved living on the lake. Ever the handyman, he could build or fix most anything, including boats, cars, decks and docks. In service to his parish and to the underprivileged within the Chapin community, Ed volunteered with St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church's Thrift Shop outreach following his retirement. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Retreat Hospice and Gayton Terrace in Richmond.
