Mr. Long passed away on April 23, 2011. Born in Little Mountain, SC, he was the eldest son of the late John Thurrell Long, Sr. and Era Enlow Long. He was a Bronze Star recipient during the Korean War where he proudly served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Long was retired from the University of South Carolina where he worked as the manager of Housing Maintenance. A Christian man, he was a charter member of the Ashland United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Pomaria Masonic Lodge. An accomplished wood craftsman and mechanic, it was said there was nothing he could not build or repair. He also had an abiding love for golf, fishing, and his family.
Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years Adair Castles Long of Columbia; son J. Tony (Donya) Long of Aiken, SC; son M. Christopher Long of Columbia; sister Dorothy Wiles of Columbia; sister Faye (H. D.) Carter of Whitmire, SC; brother Ray (Evelyn) Long of Columbia; grandchildren Melissa Hawley, Amanda Poole, and Marie Turner; and great-grandchildren Chad Hawley and Emily Poole.
