John Nash Obituary

John R. Nash, Jr., M.D.
April 12, 1942 - March 26, 2023
Edisto Island, South Carolina - John R. Nash, Jr., M.D., 80, of Edisto Island, S.C., slipped into the next room on Sunday, March 26, 2023. He was born on April 12, 1942, in Charlotte, N.C., the first of four children to John Raymond and Frances Crowell Nash. After earning degrees in business and economics from UNC-Chapel Hill and Emory University, respectively, he worked for a management consultant firm based in Atlanta. After living in a Manhattan hotel room for a year, he decided to pursue a new career with greater rewards and better hours, in medicine, delivering babies. He graduated in 1976 from the MUSC College of Medicine, performed a residency at Carolinas Medical Center and began a 27-year career in which he brought healing, joy and comfort to thousands of families.
He loved his friends, a good laugh, an assertive Bloody Mary, R&B, shag dancing, watercolor painting, making up his own recipes, giving his kids bad haircuts, the water and everything in it, his beloved island, Tarheel basketball (even this season) and above all, his wife and family. He searched for the content of people's character and strived to honor the first and second greatest commandments, to love God and his neighbor.
He was predeceased by his brother, David, and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susanne; son John (Kathy) of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; daughter Molly Dantzler (Patrick) of Levy, S.C., sister Jane (Bill) of Edisto Island; brother Tom (Jim Smallridge) of Charlotte; grandchildren Jackson Nash, Scott Nash, Lilly Dantzler, and Lucy Dantzler; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends, all of whom he has blessed with a lifetime of rich and riotous memories.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at the Episcopal Church on Edisto, 1650 Highway 174, Edisto Island.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Planned Parenthood or the ETV Endowment of South Carolina.

I was sharing birth memories with my 31 year old daughter (she loves to hear her and her siblings birth stories) and we where talking about Dr. Nash. She said, " Mama, I would love to meet Dr Nash and give him a hug! We then looked him up on the web and that´s when we saw that he passed last year. Dr Nash was one of a kind! His vibe, aura and professionalism made me instantly love him when he became my OBGYN. He enjoyed talking sports to my husband who had played briefly for Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. Sometimes they would be laughing and talking during my OBGYN visit, I would say, "baby over here" and Dr Nash would then say something with his quick wit! God surely blessed the world with an OBGYN like Dr Nash! He delivered 3 of our 5 children! My sincere belated condolences to Dr Nash´s family and thank you for sharing such a marvelous human being with us! God Bless RIP Dr Nash

I embarrassingly just learned of Dr. Nash's passing today almost 1 year too late. Otherwise I certainly would have attended his funeral service at Edisto Trinity Episcopal Church. I am very devastated to learn of his passing . I have numerous doctors in my own family , but Dr. Nash was absolutely the best physician I have ever met. He was so very special to me because he delivered 3 of my 5 beautiful children. Aside from his obvious obstetrics talents , he was also a shrewd general medicine diagnostician . His genuine kindness and attention to detail went unsurpassed. I had also attended the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill so we had that in common. I especially enjoyed his fantastic sense of humor and his sly, dry wit which was contagious. My belated but immense sympathies go out to his beloved wife, children , and grandchildren. I wish there were as many fantastic physicians exactly like him still practicing medicine today. To me John was a man born on this earth solely to practice medicine. My thoughts are with all of those who loved this very special and beautiful human being. The world is now a much sadder and emptier place without him. Again my utmost sympathies.

Prayers to the family...Dr. Nash delivered my first baby because he was on-call. Nervous since he was not my Dr; but, his humor & gentle personality quickly put me at ease.

Dr. Nash was a favorite doctor to many but I had the pleasure of working with he and Dr Meares. There were great stories full of wit and when you didn´t expect it, his good heart and character would show. He let the girls of the office have a weekend at his Edisto home and it was easy to see why he loved it. To his wife and children, he loved y´all and spoke of each of you often. Glad he was with you for so long. Condolences in your loss. Ann (lab)

Dr. Nash carefully delivered my daughter by C-section 36 years ago. Before the surgery, I asked him if he could make the incision so that the scar would not be visible when I was able to get back into my bikini. He did a great job and quipped, "If anyone sees this scar at the beach, you are going to get arrested." His humor was much appreciated, especially at that time. Thanks, Dr. Nash! I never got arrested, and I have a wonderful, healthy daughter to boot. You were a good one and will be greatly missed.

To Susanne and John´s entire family, know that my thoughts and prayers for comfort are with you all. I was so sad to learn that John had passed...just this morning. I am so sorry to have missed his service ...I am out of the country.
John was irreplaceable and we shall all miss him forever. Most of my memories of John were when we were growing up ...sharing holidays at our grandparents´ house. Later David and I partied at John´s fraternity at Carolina . I was always proud to call him my cousin. Rest well my friend.
