Larry Clarkson Cooke

October 18, 1947 - April 9, 2024

Columbia, South Carolina - Larry Clarkson Cooke, 76, passed away on April 9th, 2024. Larry was born October 18th, 1947, in Columbia, SC. He was the son of the late Nathaniel Clarkson Cooke and Georgia Durden Cooke. Growing up in Columbia, he graduated from Dreher High School in 1966, after which he attended the University of South Carolina earning a degree in Business Administration. During his college years, he worked for Vernon's Beach Service in Myrtle Beach and helped manage the Twilight Lounge in Columbia alongside Wayne McDonald and Slim Cagel.

After graduating, Larry explored opportunities in the food and beverage industry, as a partner at establishments such as McDougall's, Saharai's, Swinson's, and the Grazing Monkey. Later in his career, he transitioned to real estate, specializing in sustainable housing and green spaces.

Larry was an exceptional artist, particularly skilled in mixed media. His unique creations often repurposed recycled materials, showcasing his talent and creativity. Over the past decade, Larry gained recognition locally and in Hilton Head for his outsider art exhibited in several art shows.

A southern gentleman, Larry brightened the lives of those around him with warm smiles and a twinkle in his eye. He was a loyal friend, loved by many for his witty personality and charming demeanor.

Larry is survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Deborra Campbell (Steve), Beth Keen (Johnny), Paul Dyches (Lisa), Mary Catherine Hendry (Chris), Annette Haynes (Alan), Jim Fulton (Cindy), Patricia Fulton, Jacqueline Tao Brody, Raegan Tate Brody Caulk (Cort), and his soul mate Sheila Brody-Cooke.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, a brother named Boncil Dyches, and his sisters Mary Jane Fulton and Beverly Tokunaga.

The family expresses deep gratitude for the unwavering efforts and the compassionate care provided by his caregivers: Trish Fulton, Rosa Davis, Gwendolyn Green, Teresa Hammonds, Lisa Green, and Tomiko Lloyd. Their dedication during his illness is sincerely appreciated.

A celebration of life will be held at 316 Senate Street on May 5th, 2024 from 2-4 pm. Donations may be made in Larry's memory to the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741) and the Carolina Wildlife Center (5551 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC, 29212).
