Myrtle McDaniel Obituary

Myrtle D. McDaniel Retired Educator ORANGEBURG - Retired Orangeburg District 5 Assistant Superintendent, Myrtle D. McDaniel, died at her home on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. McDaniel filled many positions at the district from classroom teacher to Statewide Facilitator to Assistant Superintendent, retiring from that position in 1996. While employed in the field of education, she served as the first African- American President of the Classroom Teachers Association of South Carolina. She also advocated arts in the schools through her work with the gifted and talented on the local and state levels. McDaniel received numerous awards for her service and accomplishments. These include: Girls Scouts of Eastern South Carolina's Distinguished Woman Award, being named a Point of Light by the Disney Corporation and receiving a Smithsonian Award for innovative use of technology in the classroom. She has been honored through numerous articles and interviews and has been the subject of a documentary on the successful desegregation of Orangeburg School District 5. Myrtle McDaniel was a 1995 graduate of Claflin University. Her volunteerism has extended beyond the university to include service to the Orangeburg Civic Ballet, The Orangeburg County Development Commission and Trinity United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, where she most recently taught tap dance to 4 year olds in the pre-school program. Myrtle David McDaniel is survived by a host of family and friends that include a sister, Earnestine Gordon of Bronx, NY; a daughter, Yvette McDaniel of Orangeburg, SC: a daughter-in-law, Robin McDaniel and grandchildren, Britnie and Jas McDaniel of Brockton, Massachusetts, and a cousin Jeffery Hughes of Orangeburg, SC. Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, SC at 11:00 am on Monday, May 21, 2012 with Rev. Larry D. McCutcheon presiding. The casket will be placed in the church at 10:00 am. A public viewing of the body will be held at Bythewood Funeral Home in Orangeburg, SC on Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Interment will follow to Belleville Memorial Gardens immediately following the service. Memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Myrtle McDaniel sent to Claflin University, James A. McDaniel, Sr. Music Scholarship.

Yvette, I just want you to know I truly love your mother, Mrs. Bracey, Aunt Josephine and Mrs. York. The four of them made my entrance to teaching a breeze. Mrs. McDaniels Always said, "baby you go in that classroom and you teach those children what they need to know. Love them like they are your own!" I did just that. Those four are what you call "OLD SCHOOL!" I will Miss Her.
