Richard Bernhardt Waldkirch
October 26, 1932 - September 14, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina - Richard Bernhardt Waldkirch, 88, of Columbia, SC died Tuesday, September 14, 2021 surrounded by his three children. Born in Nashville, Tennessee on October 26, 1932, he was the son of the late William Frederick Waldkirch and Marion Bone Cox Waldkirch. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in Korea. Upon his return to Nashville, he graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. On August 29, 1958, he married the love of his life, Betty Carol Sensing, who preceded him in death on September 17, 2019.
Mr. Waldkirch began his long career with DuPont which led the family to Waynesboro, Virginia and ultimately to Camden, South Carolina in 1965. While in Camden, Mr. Waldkirch was an active member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church and volunteered many hours on behalf of habitat of Humanity of Kershaw County. Mr. and Mrs. Waldkirch moved to Columbia in 2016.
Mr. Waldkirch is survived by his sons, Bryant Scott Waldkirch (Susan), of Charlotte, NC and David Michael Waldkirch (fiancée Susan), of Simpsonville, SC and daughter, Stacey Lynn Dickinson (Robert), of Blythewood, SC. He was "Granddaddy" to Rebecca Waldkirch (Ben), Jennifer Waldkirch, Lauren Kight (Brendan), Michael Waldkirch (Hannah), Sarah Waldkirch, Corey Dickinson, Logan Dickinson, and Clay Dickinson (Lexi), and great-grandchildren: Harper, Rowan, and Haven Kight and Emory Waldkirch.
In addition to his parents and his wife Betty, Mr. Waldkirch was predeceased by his brothers, William Frederick Waldkirch, Jr., of Nashville, TN and Oscar Waldkirch, of Wilmington, NC; and his sister, Marion De Juan of Puerto Rico.
A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Waldkirch will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden, SC. The family will receive friends at 1:00 PM, one hour prior to the service, in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 116 E. DeKalb Street, Camden, SC or Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC.
