Steven Cogburn Obituary

Steven Clinton Cogburn, Jr. WEST COLUMBIA - Steven Clinton "Ike" Cogburn, Jr., of West Columbia, passed away with his family at his side Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Ike was born May 19, 1933, in Edgefield County, S.C. He was a son of Steven Clinton Cogburn, Sr. and Hattie Lou Logue Cogburn. Ike was married for 61 years to his beloved wife, Frances Quattlebaum Cogburn. Ike and Fran joined Northside Baptist Church in the early 1960s, and faithfully served the Lord there throughout their years of membership. Ike, along with his brothers John and Ben, owned and operated Cogburn's Restaurant in downtown Columbia, and later in West Columbia. Ike retired after 21 years in the Army National Guard, and then later served his community as a member of the West Columbia City Council, and also on the City of West Columbia Election Commission. Ike was a member of the Gamecock Club for 57 years, and cheered on his Gamecocks rain or shine. He enjoyed watching sports at all levels, including high school, and often fed the Brookland-Cayce High School football team a steak dinner at his restaurant after big wins. He coached Little League baseball for many years, and often sponsored a team through Cogburn's Restaurant. Ike had a large and loving family. He was one of 10 children. He had three brothers, Ben, John, and Avery, and four sisters, Sue, Ruby Mae, Rebecca and Rhett, who predeceased him. His sisters, Helen Hare and Joan Noble, survive him. Ike and Fran were blessed with two children, Natalie (Bruce) Butrym, and Steve (Vanessa Patterson) Cogburn, III; four grandchildren, Steven Cogburn, Courtney (Chris) Branham, Merritt (Logan) Temple, and Anna (Arthur) Yencho; and five great-grandchildren, Landon and Emma Lynn Cogburn, Caroline and Christian Branham, and AJ Yencho. Nothing gave him greater joy than playing and spending time with his great-grandchildren. He loved nothing more than spoiling them rotten, just like he had his grandchildren. A visitation honoring Ike's life will be held Friday, November 10, 2017 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Northside Baptist Church, 4347 Sunset Boulevard, Lexington, SC 29072, with a memorial service immediately following. Pastor Rocky Purvis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northside Baptist Church, or a charity of your choice, in his memory. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the Cogburn family with his arrangements. Friends can sign the online guestbook at www.thompsonsfuneral.com.

Fran, Gloria and I were greatly saddened to learn that Ike passed away on Tuesday. What a special, special person he was. Oh, how we enjoyed his steak sandwiches and cold plates (1959-1963). And how we enjoyed 20 years of Gamecock baseball with Ike and Fran. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and and your family in your time of loss. For all of us who knew him, we are all better people because we counted Ike Cogburn as our friend during this life. God bless.
