West Columbia, South Carolina - Virginia Laney Walters, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2022.
Mrs. Walters was born in Rittman Ohio on December 11, 1926, to the late James Otis Laney and Bessie Tester Laney Williams. She met her husband, William Cecil Walters in Hartsville, SC, and they married soon after in 1950.
She is survived by her three daughters, Debbie Craven (Lonnie) of Matthews, Nc, Virginia Cook (Van) of Chapin, and Patricia Walters of Columbia, as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her older sister, Helen Gainey of Port Royal, SC.
Mrs. Walters was predeceased by her beloved husband of fifty-nine years, William Cecil Walters, and her daughter, Sandra Walters Frier. She was also predeceased by her brother, Eugene Laney and sister, Eileen Lewis. Mrs. Walters was a very special mother, grandmother, sister, wife, and friend! She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.
Mrs. Walters graduated from Hartsville High School and received an Associates Degree in Business from Winthrop University and Coker College. She worked for several years in Human Resources for Sonoco Products Company in Hartsville, SC.
Virginia was very active in her church and community. She was a long-time member of Alice Drive Baptist Church in Sumter, SC, where she was involved in the Friendship Sunday School Class, the Women's Missionary Union, and was a teacher in the nursery. She also served in leadership roles with the Sumter Christian Women's Club and served as a volunteer for many years at Tuomey Hospital.
Mrs. Walters lived at Laurel Crest Retirement Community in West Columbia for the past seven years. She enjoyed getting to know the other residents and staff as well as participating in all events, outings, and programs. The family is so appreciative of all the loving care she has received from the wonderful caregivers and staff at Laurel Crest!
A graveside service for Mrs. Walters will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Evergreen Cemetery, 802 N. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Laurel Crest Retirement Community, 100 Joseph Walker Drive, West Columbia, SC or to the Sumter SPCA, www.sumterspca.com, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.
