William Hamilton McAfee Jr. obituary, Irmo, SC

William McAfee Obituary

IRMO - William "Bill" Hamilton McAfee Jr., a South Carolina native and longtime resident of Columbia, passed away unexpectedly due to injuries suffered after a fall while climbing in the North Carolina mountains on Monday, January 2, 2012. Bill was born in Charleston, S.C., February 20, 1971, and spent most of his childhood in Virginia.

Bill was the son of William Hamilton and Marilyn Maddex McAfee Sr. of Columbus, Ga., and older brother to Courtney McAfee Cuthbertson who resides in Maryland with her family. He will be remembered with love by his uncle, James Landon Maddex, of Salem, Va., with whom he was very close. Adored by his wife of 17 years, Teresa Morley McAfee, Bill was also blessed with and was a devoted father to his three children Rachel (17), Hamilton (14) and Landon (11) who will miss him dearly. A graduate of The Citadel in 1993, Bill was a 1st Battalion Executive Officer, Distinguished Naval Student, and a Marine Corps Contract Cadet. Bill was also an honors graduate of the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School.

Bill enjoyed a successful career as the Chief Financial Advisor and President of WHM Capital Advisors in Columbia, servicing clients from the Carolinas to the Middle East. He was a published author in several professional journals and a featured guest on radio and television programs. He also served for five years on the adjunct faculty at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. His activity in the business and civic communities extended to several certifications and designations: Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Certified Accredited Valuation Analyst (AVA), Chairman for the S.C. Club for Growth, served on Lake Murray Young Life Committee, Board Member for Palmetto Arts Society, Member of Transition Team for S.C. Treasurer Curtis Loftis, Member of Palmetto Club, and Former Board Member Center for Global Strategies.

Blessed by the Lord in 2004 as an organ donor recipient, Bill lived life to the fullest, enjoying the challenges of leisure and competitive activities including climbing, triathlons and running. He most especially loved sharing the love of Christ with friends and family. He will be remembered for his enduring faith, his ability to inspire those around him, his energy for life and his love of all the gifts God had given to him and to his family. Bill was a good man, a wonderful Christian who deeply loved the Lord, and a friend to so many. He will be missed by all who knew him but we rejoice that he now beholds his Savior face to face. His life would be most honored and celebrated if those he has left behind would carry on his habit of boldly telling others how great and wide and deep is the love of Christ.

Friends and family are invited to a worship service to honor God and celebrate Bill's life Friday, January 6, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church of the Carolinas in Columbia with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to any of the following organizations: Harvest Hope Food Bank at www.harvesthope.org, Autism Speaks at www.autismspeaks.org, Live School at www.liveschool.org, Lake Murray Young Life at www.lakemurray.younglife.org, or Donate Life at www.donatelife.net.

Teresa,
I am deeply sadden by the news of Bill's passing. Bill and I were not only kidney transplant recipients, but we were also Citadel grads. Bill was one who I admired and respected as he inspired me to try harder in track and field events at the transplant games. I will miss Bill and his dedication to our mission at DonateLife, SC.

Dear sweet family. I'm just so sorry to hear about Bill, but also knowing he was doing something he loved. I remember him at the US Transplant Games in Louisville. I met Bill through my work in the Carolinas with UK Trade and Investment. While I spent only a handful of times meeting with him and colleagues about his business, it was impossible not to be inspired by Bill's excitement for life and vision for his work. He was one of those unique people you would meet in the course of business who made a huge, positive impression on you through his kind spirit and his warm, friendly exchanges. He was a delight to know and I am truly so sorry to hear this news. My heart goes out to your family and friends. My sincerest condolences.

Teresa: There are no words to express the sense of loss, but I know Bill would have wanted us to rejoice with him. I am privileged to have counted Bill as one of my closest friends in years past and regret not having taken the opportunity to spend time together in recent years. I will remember Bill as one of the bravest men I have known. He faced adversity with courage and hope. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and the children.
