David Ison Obituary

David P. Ison, MD, 89, of Attleboro, MA died peacefully Thursday night, July 28, 2022, surrounded by his family at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Elisa (Chan) Ison.

Born in Taytay Rizal, Philippines, on May 23, 1933, he was the son of the late Melecio and Salome Ison.

He grew up in a family of eleven children and graduated from Rizal High School in Taytay Rizal where he was the Valedictorian of his class. David was accepted as a National Scholar at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and graduated in 1958.

While doing his residency in Internal Medicine at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in 1962, he met his future wife, Elisa an RN at the same hospital. They were married on February 29, 1964. Shortly after, he completed his fellowship in non-invasive cardiology in St. Louis, Missouri. In August 1968, he returned to the Philippines to practice medicine there - a promise he made to his parents.

In June 1972, he practiced in Lynchburg, Virginia, and then finally settled in Attleboro, Massachusetts, in October 1973. David served as an Internist in private practice and on the staff at Sturdy Memorial Hospital from 1973 until 2002 in Attleboro.

He was a kind and caring doctor to many in the community. Despite his commitment to service as a doctor, David's number one priority in life was his family. David and Elisa were married for 58 years. With his beloved wife, he had three children: Anna, Daniel, and Diane. During their youth, they took many family vacations together all over the country, to Canada, and to the Philippines. Summers were enjoyed at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire with boat rides as well as local tennis at Bearcroft Swim and Tennis Club. He was also a member at Highland Country Club. Despite his busy schedule, he made time to watch his children participate in sports at Bishop Feehan High School.

For certain, the joy of David's retirement were his seven grandchildren: Brett, Patrick, and Davis Chatfield of Attleboro, MA; Andrew and Isabel Ison of Cumberland, RI; and Jasper and Annika Verplancke of Belgium. Forever the proud grandfather, you could always count on Papa David walking the fairways of a golf course in a tournament, or sitting on the sidelines of a soccer, baseball, basketball and lacrosse game or gymnastics meet. He also enjoyed jazz concerts and professional dance performances. He loved and enjoyed watching his grandchildren!

David was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church for 48 years and also enjoyed the daily Mass at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, both in Attleboro.

In addition to his wife, three children and seven grandchildren, David is survived by his sons-in-law, Stephen Chatfield of Attleboro, MA, and Peter Verplancke of Belgium; his brothers: Benedicto Ison and his wife, Edith, and Melecio Ison Jr. and his wife, Lydge, both of Australia; Medardo Ison and his wife, Emma, of San Diego, California; and his sister, Maria Salome Ison of the Philippines. He also leaves 27 nephews and 22 nieces.

David was predeceased by his sisters: Felicitas De Leon, Macaria Mueco, and Jovencia Bernardo, and his brothers: Arturo Ison, Claro Ison, and Elpidio Ison.

David was a loving husband, amazing father, and fun grandfather. His family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at Sturdy Memorial Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital, as well as the EMS of Attleboro for their loving care and support for David. We will all miss him dearly.
